Sleep Mode Misbehaving

I am aware that this subject has been raised on a number of occasions. I have tried a few supposed solutions without success but I am rather hoping that the answer to my specific problem is now available.

When I select sleep mode on my HP Compaq Presario56 laptop I am now finding that instead of just sleeping, the OS goes into a coma. That is to say, I cannot restore the screen with the mouse or keyboard. I have to switch off and then back on. This brings up the 'Windows Error Recovery' screen from which I can start Windows normally. Also, if I close the lid it does not power down but, again, the screen becomes comatose.

This is a fairly recent phenomena as far as my m/c is concerned and I have no idea what is causing it.
The sort of things I have tried include changing the power management settings and updating the graphics card driver.

Any suggestions how to restore things back to as they should be please.

PS. I am not sure about 'hibernation' mode because it is a feature I never use, so I can't say if that mode is also misbehaving but I guess it probably is.

I would try checking the mfrs support site to see if there are any updated chipset drivers. And update/fix of drivers for the chipset may fix the issue by instructing the hardware in a better way to identify which devices in your system use power management and telling the devices attached to your system how to use them etc. And by doing that it may fix the issue. I would give that a shot and see if it resolves your issue. Either way report back and let us know what happens.

I went onto the AMD website and downloaded their chipset driver and the graphics card driver. The AMD installer site (Catalyst it seemed to be called) signaled errors during the installation processes, but nevertheless seemed to continue the installation for both drivers as far as I could tell. Both processes produced error logs which I am unable to fully comprehend. However, at the end of it all the 'sleep mode' problem continues, unfortunately.
