CPU idle at 50C. Is this normal?

I'm on Windows 8.1 by the way. There are no programs running besides the normal background services and task manager. task manager showing 0-1% CPU usage because of task manager being open, nothing else. I also disabled a lot of services I know I don't need. Background processes are around 30 and windows processes are around 20 which I know are both normal. Is 50C too high when laptop is idle?

It's certainly well within design limits.

Ambient temps have a major effect. If you take the thing into a room that is 10 degrees cooler, you should see noticeably cooler temps.

Laptops run hot by design. That's a trade-off you accept in exchange for light weight, size, and portability.

Unless it is an antique laptop, it should throttle itself if temps rise high enough.

You could get a cooling device or just live with it. Try to keep vents clean and make some sort of attempt to understand what "normal" temps are for certain tasks--idling, browsing the net, gaming, rendering video, whatever you do.

Likewise, use a monitoring program to confirm that all fans are operating normally.
