need to re-install windows 7 when change CPU

    Hi everybody,

I have bought a new Intel Q9550 from Amazon and make a change from my old Q6600 intel, and i see that windows 7 can be started without being re-installed.

    Q6600 : 8mo cache - 65nm technology - 2.4Ghz @ stock
    Q9550 : 12Mo Cache - 45 Technology - 2.8 Ghz @ stock

Seem to be fine hearing that i dont need to re-install window, hein. But as i'm a newbie with computer's hardware, so I want to ask you if i realy need to re-install windows 7 ? Or lack of re-install, shall i have any issue of performance with my new intel chip ?

    Thank you.

No performance loss. Changing only the CPU, Windows realizes something is different and adjusts accordingly upon first boot. It's when you change something like to a different motherboard that it can become more difficult. That's because a motherboard is not a single entity when viewed by Windows like only a CPU is. Motherboard requires many more software "changes."

So ya. Replacing CPU should not cause Windows any problems and should carry on as normal, only making use of new CPU now.

You should be fine without reinstalling.

When swapping a motherboard for a new one, it is always prudent to reinstall, even if they're the exact same model. However, processor package upgrades of this nature are going to be detected and dealt with appropriately even without reinstallation.

If you're worried, run SYSTEMINFO from a CMD prompt. You should see the details of the new processor displayed, including its faster clock rate.

Yes. Apparently that happens when you hang out in the same forum sections as somebody else

hi , Thanks Torrentg and H2SO4 for relpies, i appreciate .

Yes, H2sO4, you have reason, windows found the spec of the new CPU correctly. so i dont need to worry anymore .

But it is strange also because last time when i used Vista Ultimate x64, i changed the cpu from E6600 to Q6600, the vista ultimate x64 couldn't boot with the new one.
