AVG free & Chrome hammering my hard drive - solid green light 50mins!?

I looked at what programs are hammering my hard drive and Chrome is accessing my HDD all the time. I've got about 5 tabs open but theres nothing really happening on the pages.

Also, AVG (vprot.exe, avgui.exe) are thumping my hard drive too.
I am seriously thinking of getting rid of AVG, its just a resource hog too often now.
Any light anti viruses you recommend?

I noticed the same thing abut AVG, so I uninstalled it. Lots of members recommend Avast, but I myself just stick to the basic Microsoft offering (Essential/Defender ?), and also scan with Malwarebytes regularly.

As Matthew 5:29-30 says: And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee :)

Dump AVG and Chrome, switch to Security Essentials and IE or Firefox.

I did remove AVG and install Essentials. Seems to be running much better. Thanks. However, I don't like FF or IE as much as Chrome. Chrome runs great and its my browser of choice, but sometimes it fails with flash video playback.

I've had way to many problems with Chrome to use it. There are other choices too:

    Seamonkey
    PaleMoon
    WaterFox
    Safari

I use Seamonkey as I like the browser/E-mail suite like in the Netscape days.

I installed Opera a few weeks ago. Can't say I'm too impressed with that though. I thought it would handle flash better. Chrome only annoys me in the flash area, apart from that its better than my previous browsers IE and FF.

I totally agree about getting rid of AVG, but Chrome never causes me any issues :)

AVG and Norton, worst 2 programs for hogging processors, Get Avast, but only get the free Avast, its just a simple antivirus program, that can also keep your programs up to date, and detect unwanted plugins in chrome, or whatever browser you use.
I have used it for 13 years now, never had 1 problem with it.

Thanks, I am using Microsoft Essentials now with Malwarebytes.
Btw, we have the same flags - UK and Durham City!
