PC shutting down incorrectly when put in sleep mode/hibernate

My computer keeps shutting down after I put it into sleep mode, then when i start it back up it says that it shut down incorrectly. This does not happen all the time, only sporadically. Other times it will not go into sleep mode altogether! Also, I'm not sure if this is a related problem but when I put my PC into hibernate I've actually had it wake up randomly with the 'windows did not shut down correctly screen' and had to reboot my PC because it was stuck in hibernate. Does anyone know what could be causing these problems and how to fix them? thanks so much

You can also try a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Sorry, can't offer any more directions, I don't use sleep myself.
