Windows 7: Green Check marks appearing on desktop icons, what causes this?

I did find that that overlay icon is used by google drive. It shows up in the google drive folder for all the synced files. But I'm not sure why it would be showing up on some of my desktop icons.

Is probably google drive or dropbox like Ztruker says. Dropbox uses a round green circle with a white checkmark though I think. Could also be skydrive.

The green checkmark I showed in the image for the first post is a checkmark that appears to be unique to google. So I think the issue is with google drive. However there isn't any way it should have done that to icons on my desktop. It is supposed to signify that files have been synced to google drive.

I've posted this on the google drive forums as well.

Is there a way I can reset the icons? Maybe something went bad and did this?
So nothing showed up at the reg entry?
yes I posted a link for showing my registry but for some reason it says it needs approval by the moderator....

I'll try again..

If memory serves me, the number of apps that can put overlays on icons is limited to three. Perhaps Explorer is confused. I would suggest going into each app and turning off the option to add icon overlays. Restart the computer and then turn on icon overlays for the apps that you want.

I'm pretty sure I'm not however even if I was it wouldn't do random files? Also none of the files appear in my google drive. I have two accounts and I checked them both, nothing.

I'm sorry about the postings. I didn't see the attachment icon in the editor..

I think the problem is with google drive. I tried to look at preferences and I'm only getting a gray box. I'll try to uninstall google drive and then reinstall it.

Maybe the settings app for Google drive need to be run as admin to get to that overlay feature.

Ok I uninstalled google drive, one drive and drop box. Each time the icon changed. After google drive it was a small green dot with a white check mark in the middle. After removing everything now I got a yellow padlock like symbol.

Here is the registry before and after I uninstalled programs.

Do you think I should start removing them from the registry directly? Skydrive and dropbox should have gone when I uninstalled dropbox and one drive. gdrive is also one associated with google drive.

Do you know which ones are part of windows and need to be maintained? Also since the icons switch is there some cache where icons are flagged to have overlays that might need to be cleared?

I found the gold padlock icon is the one microsoft uses when files or folders are private in a shared folder. However that doesn't apply to any of these. It seems like the overlay mapping is somehow messed up.
