Green Check marks appearing on desktop icons, what causes this?

I've been running windows 7 for quite awhile. A couple days ago suddenly some of the icons on my desktop have green checkmarks. I've tried to research it and saw info about backups with norton 360 and I went in and disabled the overlay but these check marks don't look like the ones in screen shots from other people. I've searched all over on google and haven't been able to find any image of checkmarks that look like these.

    I'm stumped....

They only appear on some of the desktop icons. There isn't any pattern I can see. Some are on folders but not all folders, some are on shortcuts but not all shortcuts, and some are on files but not all. When I look at file manager and go to the desktop in file manager the icons all look normal. When I create new folders they don't have check marks.

Here is an image of some icons

    Thanks for any help!

Do you have norton installed or a type of backup program like sugarsync? http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...c-eb9a60e7c423

Those overlay icons are usually identified in this registry key:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
If you look in the via regedit, you can probably tell the name of the app that is putting the green check mark there.

Well I figured out what the icon was from. Looks like google uses that icon in google drive to represent files that have been synced. That doesn't really explain why some of the random icons on my desktop would look like that? The link below shows the overlays in my registry. Looks like I have a bunch of them...

Also no I don't have any backup programs other than the one that is included with Norton 360. I have disabled the overlays in that one.

Is there a way I can reset the icons? Maybe something went bad and did this?

Looks like one of the cloud backup services like Mediafire or Dropbox.

I also tried moving the icons to a new folder. In the new folder they don't have any check mark. However when I move them back they again have the checkmark. When I move an icon without a checkmark into a folder and back it doesn't get a checkmark.
