    Windows 7 Registry Cleaners

Just some advice for you. Never use any Registry Cleaner program.
Windows 7 is quite capable of taking care of the registry.
Third party programs will very probably destroy your registry and make your computer unusable.
There are quite a few of these Registry Cleaner programs available for download on the internet.
    Avoid them like the plague

    Agree 100%.

In principle there is nothing wrong with cleaning the registry, removing obsolete entries and repairing those that are in error. The problem is that this cannot be done in a way that is completely safe.

In most cases there is no completely reliable way to determine that a specific registry entry is unused or in error. Applications use the registry in a wide variety of ways, some of which are quite unusual and unknown to the registry cleaner authors. There are no firm standards for this, only recommendations, and they are frequently ignored. And there is nothing in the registry that designates what application own a specific entry or what it is used for. As an amateur programmer I speak from personal experience.

Lacking a reliable way of determining if a registry entry is unneeded or in error a registry cleaner must make many guesses. Most of the time these guesses are right, but sometimes they are wrong. And there lies the problem. The consequences of deleting or "repairing" and valid entry are unpredictable. The problem may be immediately known to the computer user, or it may take weeks or months for the error to become visible, or it may never become apparent. The latter is potentially the most dangerous.

There is little evidence that regular registry cleaning is beneficial and most of that is questionable. The risks of registry cleaning are quite well known. I prefer to err on the side of caution.

CCleaner has always been great and never caused a problem :)

The selling point with these registry cleaners is that a "clean" registry will speedup your computer. I've never used a cleaner, but folks who have say they didn't notice any speed increase. So, what's the use?

They are not used because they cause the PC to run faster.

Anxiety relief is one of the most common complaints heard in doctors' offices---right up there with fatigue. I just read that 60 percent of Americans are taking some type of prescription medication. So, it's no wonder that registry cleaners are widespread.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. When I first came to Windows 7 I brought along my XP habits and paid the price for registry cleaning.
