Why is my Mega PC running so slowly?

OK so I mainly use my PC for work but the old Dell had was beginning to groan under it's workload and the hard drive was nearly full. As it was about 5 year old I decided to replace it with something faster.

The result was I bought a 64bit, AMD FX (tm)-4130 quad-core processor 3.80GHz, with 16GB of ram and 2 x 250GB Samsung SSD's. It's built on a GA-78LMT-USB3 Gigabyte motherboard

This seemed like overkill and I was anticipating it would fly through my stuff, mainly Excel, Webplus X8 and a bit of word processing all run on Windows 7 professional, but it actually seems to be slower than the old Dell.

I've tried everything I can find, cleared clutter out, reduced the size of my outlook file, been through numerous "do these 10 things to speed up your computer"! lists but it just seems very slow and sometimes hangs with a big Excel spreadsheet.

Before I finally just bin the thing and buy another Dell, has anyone got any ideas of what it might be. I suspect it's got to be something radical simply because anything I do doesn't seem to help?

The base "Windows Experience" scores are processor:7.2, RAM:7.2, graphics:6.6, primary hard disk:6.4 if that helps?

Thank you for your help in this

Did you do a fresh install of Windows with the new machine?

I did. It was a new machine when I installed Windows 7 Professional. It's like all the bits should be fast but together they don't get on, drivers and the like seem to be up to date.

I'm thinking of installing Windows 10 to see if that sorts it out but in reality, haven't got a clue if this would help?

Idea #1 - where are you on the updates malarkey - a fresh install of W7 SP1 is going to need 200+ updates. If the updates are still grinding away in the background, that will slow any machine down.

Idea #2 - how's the temps ? IIRC AMD chips run hot, so any minor error fitting the heatsink + paste on your new build could mean the cpu is overheating and throttling.

Sorry, i'm rubbish at explaining these things.

Updates are errr up to date, the installation was done about 18 months ago when I first got the computer.

I'm not sure about the chip running hot, but 6 months ago I added one of those units that sense the chip temperature, along with 3 additional fans so I could reduce their speed and it would make less noise. This seems to have worked a treat and it's much less noisy now but it didn't affect the speed at all?

Thank you for you suggestions though. I'm sure there's an answer out there somewhere

What cooler are you using? If you are using the stock AMD cooler then you should replace it as fast as possible, i've heard those things heat up to 60C!
