    Roy,

I ran Combo Fix (with AVG turned off). It did not change my problems, but I'm sure it took care of the quarantined files.

    try this

    Hi Les,
no Malware expert but it did remove some leftovers(orphans).

If you know roughly when the links failed, have a look at the last 30 days part of the Combofix log, you might be able to pin it down.

    Anyway try this fix
Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Hi Roy,

Thanks for sticking with me on this problem. I restored file associations via the link you sent, but the issues have remained the same. The computer does seem faster though, so perhaps there was some good from that exercise.

    Roy,
I ran a scan with Rkill (log attached) and it indicates missing services. Can you help me with this? Thanks.

    Hi Les,
    Those missing services
Your defrag service, there are other better free ones out there
The other one is your System restore function

    Dll's just dont go missing.

    READ ONLY,

    Remove System Restore (Uninstall Guide)

if you have experienced any of the other symptoms that are mentioned here, i would suggest you follow the guidelines, for expert removal in that forum.

    Roy,

I went to the site and followed applicable steps and ran Rkill again (log attached). It does appear to have fixed some issues. However, the same problems exist on this system. I do recall some months ago that while installing an update, there was a power outage. When I rebooted this computer there were multiple problems so I ran Tweaking.com and it seemed to run OK after that fix. I wonder if that incident is the root cause of the current problems?

    Roy,

I thank you for your efforts. After all was said and done, the best and only reasonable fix was an in place upgrade. I would have saved a lot of time (and yours) if I had taken the most extreme measure first. All is good again. I appreciate your expertise and diligence.
