svchost.exe (netsvcs) consuming 25% of a quad core laptop

This just started in the past few days.

Resource Monitor says that the svchost.exe (netsvcs) process has 39 threads and as mentioned it is using 25% of the CPU. Not when I first boot up, but after about 30 minutes of Chrome (which is the only application I have running).

I do know how to chase this issue down any further.

If you put a check by the svchost.exe (netsvcs) process and then click on the single chevron to open the pane named Services, you will probably see that the Windows Update (wuauserv) service is the culprit. You might see the CPU numbers spike for wuauserv and then BITS. Eventually, TrustedInstaller.exe (Processes pane) might also start to spike.

If it is the Windows Update process (wuauserv, BITS, TrustedInstaller...) that is taking up CPU cycles, then you are not alone - there are lots of threads about this. I would suggest setting the laptop not to sleep and let it complete whatever it is that it is doing.

If it still does it after leaving it on overnight, then maybe resetting Windows Update will help. See the steps under option three: Windows Update - Reset

The screenshots above were taken on a system that had the latest Windows Update Client installed. Windows Update Agent (7.6.7600.320) had not been installed. See this post for more info: Latest Windows Update Client - Windows Update Agent

I’ve been having a similar problem as mentioned in the following.
Svchost.exe Crazy High CPU Usage and Crazy High Memory Usage

Sometime my CPU usage is 25% when doing essentially nothing. I just woke up the PC & the CPU usage is at 25%.

Resource Monitor shows Svchost.exe (netsvcs), PID #336, Host Process for Windows Services, CPU usage at 25%.

Clicking on Svchost.exe (netsvcs), Services shows 0% CPU and all the listed services also show 0% CPU. Yet Processes > Svchost.exe (netsvcs) still indicates 25% CPU.

If I un-check the Svchost.exe (netsvcs) box in Processes, now Services shows Font Cache / PID 124 / Windows Font Cache Service / Local Service at 25 CPU.

I searched for Windows Font Cache Service and all the results I looked at had problems with high CPU usage because it was not starting. However when I look at mine in Task Manager it is running. One comment said CPU usage was higher when Font Cache was not running.

Is a bad/corrupt font causing this? Or is it a program using a strange font?

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    You're lucky it's only 25%
Most have reported 50% and upwards
The new clients just get worse and worse on some machines
I have one it's stuck at 50% and fluctuates upwards to that if I manually check it will probably smoke it if left unattended.
Manually updating is getting less and less appealing :)
Never though simply updating a computer would be what kills a system but my laptop is on m$'s hit list.

Are you saying this problem cannot be corrected?
What happens if I turn off the Font Cache service?

Actually I believe things are a bit better now this was after a clean install in a not so normal way to do it,
The little trick I used pulled up 159 Important updates in about 10 minutes plus another 60 in optional updates
By disconnecting from the internet and manually loading from a flash drive
    KB3083710 and restarting after
    Then KB3102810 and restarting
It was like magic after all the crap I've read about the long delays in searching for updates on a clean install :)

But it was short lived it seems,
    Then I did this,
    I ran winkey+R
    eventvwr
Windows logs and expanded them and right clicked and cleared
    Applications
    Security
    Setup
    System

    I almost regretted it
Then I ran cmd and sfc /scannow and it found and fixed an error or two.. on the first run
Then ran it a couple more time booting between runs and showed no errors
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then I ran System update readiness tool
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=20858
After an hour it popped up and said not for this operating system
But in the mean time 5 more important updates showed up
Really kind ones that should of been included in the first round of updates I had no failed update listings :/
    kb3035126
    kb3110329
    kb3078601
    kb3035132
    kb3109094
After loading them and restarting things started rolling again and eventually all updates showed up and installed after manually checking for updates a couple times
The best thing is cpu load and temperatures are a lot better and our friend svchost.exe (netsvcs) is now in check :)

One little tip kb3035126 kb3020369 will appear in the first round of updates
It needs to be installed all by it's self
Oops wrong update that needs to be installed all by it's self

Yesterday the CPU usage was at 25% again and this time the Resource Monitor indicated is was due to a windows updating service. However I don't have Windows set to automatically update. I have to tell it to download & install updates. So I have no idea what that was about.

Did you try option three in this tutorial: Windows Update - Reset

I mentioned WU the reset in post #2.

I know this is a kind-of old post and I know this can be considered necroing. The reason I am posting this is to first thank UsernameIssues for the suggestion and second to say that using the 3rd option in the tutorial he pointed out, worked for me. I am sure like me, other users might find this thread through google and wonder if it really works or not, which it does.

It has been a couple of days that windows update service has been using a whole core for itself fully, keeping my CPU usage at 25% and making the PC hickup at times. I know Windows update can actually do that when it looks for new updates, but it has been about 4 days with that.

After resetting Windows Update, I left the PC turned on overnight and about 24 hours later, it has downloaded whatever background files it needed and it prompted me for 3 new updates. Finally after the update and restart, the CPU usage problem disappeared.

    Thanks once more =)

    Hi,
Most of the issues were caused by many poor update clients MS pushed out
Review this for an older existing updating issue,
Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

    Clean install
    windows update
