A Never Ending Stream of '... is not responding'

I even got the message while attempting to post here - sevenforums.com is not responding. If I wait a few minutes the message goes away and I can continue.
  • I have run a full Security Essentials scan - it can up clean.
  • From an elevated command I ran sfc /scannow. It detected no integrity violations
  • I updated and ran Malwarebytes. It found nothing
  • I ran JRT tool and AdwCleaner. AdwCleaner found a couple of trivialities. Cleaning them and rebooting failed to fix a thing
  • I have run IE11 without add-ons. I still get the same 'not responding' msg
  • I have reset Internet Explorer, have used Firefox. All to no avail
Sometimes I can be online for 15 minutes or so without incident. Usually it's within minutes of opening a page.

Security Essentials was taking close to 50% of my CPU, so I turned off real-time protection. All that did was make the castle turn red. But it was still consuming half my memory. I opened Programs and Features and saw no Security Essentials, so I opened Revo Uninstaller. It wasn't there either, so I downloaded MS Fixit Tool 50535 - the Security Essentials Uninstaller. That gave me an error (just saying that it couldn't complete the task), but the castle did disappear from the system tray. Taskmgr still shows MsMpEng running, but only at 29640 K , and 0 Pct.

I'm sort of at a loss.

Edit - I did manage to get Security Essentials gone from the taskmgr by running that Uninstaller again. Of course I now have no protection, and while the not responding problem is not quite as pervasive, it certainly is still a major problem. I even got it a few hours ago while disconnected and playing Spider Solitaire.

Hello mate sounds like a bit like my own problem here and it is down to my provider - in my case maybe it is worth checking with yours to report the problem.

My other thought is if the RAM is being gobbled up along with disk space perhaps you have a lot of duplicate files?? This is quite a useful article on how to check that out How to Find and Remove Duplicate Files on Windows

As for AV protection well whatever I suggest someone will come up with other stuff but here is a site where you can get free stuff from
Free Windows Desktop Software Security List | Gizmo's Freeware I would not use the AVG stuff but there are several real time softwares that I have used in the past (trialed as I use paid for Kaspersky)

Thanks for the reply. And yes I might be inclined to blame my ISP if the problem was occurring on ALL our computers, but that's not the case. We have 4 computers and a tablet and the 'not responding' problem is limited to just this one laptop.

I booted yesterday into safe mode with networking. It made no difference. Could my video card be the problem? About once a month I get a BSOD which is ALWAYS video related, I've updated the driver multiple times, but I still get that same BSOD every 1 to 2 months.

I don't seem to have a problem with disk space, The major problem with the RAM was MSE, which I finally got rid of, so I think the memory is okay. If I have taskmgr visible on the screen when I get one of those 'not responding' boxes, I see nothing dubious or alarming. In fact, taskmgr will be unusable until the NR box goes away. Actually EVERYTHING on the laptop is locked until that message resolves itself. Then it will do everything at once, like it had saved up these keystrokes.

I figure I'll probable reinstall MSE. It's worked for me on this laptop (and on all our others)
