Windows 7: High CPU usage

High CPU usage

Recently I've been experiencing consistently much higher CPU usage, often around 30-40% and frequently spiking much higher, including 100%.

I've read here that Windows Update is often the culprit. KB3020369 was already installed but KB3172605 wasn't. It now is but CPU usage is still high. There's no single process that appears responsible - quite a few take their turn, but AnVir Task Manager shows that Windows Update service in one of the svchost processes is certainly one of those regularly spiking.

Any help really appreciated.

Hi,
I'd reset the update system now that you have the newer update client installed which was included in KB3172605
Just use option 4 here
Windows Update - Reset

Right, done that but still problems. On startup after things had settled down and I hid various optional updates I didn't want, Windows Update process spikes around 15% CPU every 15 secs or so. After a while WU disappeared but was replaced by Windows Management Instrumentation process which behaves in an identical manner as WU, 15% CPU spikes every 15 secs. Again, any help really appreciated.

PS - I was reading in another thread, if I understood you correctly, you said installing KB3172605 would stop Trusted Installer process running because it replaces it with a more up to date process, but on startup Trusted Installer was still running here.

Hi,
Post a screen shot of the updates you've hidden
FYI there's no real reason to hide an update
If you don't want to install it just leave it in the Optional section.

Click Start and type in the search box
resource monitor
Go to the overview section to see what is going on
Post a screen shot like this one.

Hi,
Take a screen shot when cpu usage is high not when it's low

Hiding Important updates is never a good thing to do and you have hid several = why ?
What problems did you have with them exactly ?

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Stuttering and high CPU usage while downloading at high speeds
I've been having this problem now for an year or so now. It started when I upgraded my connection from 8/1 ADSL to 100/10 cable (so the problem wasn't noticeable even if it was there before) and when I download at high speeds (in steam, for example) my CPU usage jumps to 80% and higher, and my pc...

Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)
This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted. 1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues. 2. I reformatted and...

Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!
Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this! I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine....
