    High CPU Usage issue.


    Hey guys, I got an issue with high CPU usage on my Laptop. At idle my CPU usage is around 1-4%. That seems alright, but as soon as I even open up a program of folder it jumps up to 30%+ all the way to even 85%. Is this normal? I've disabled my HDMI audio and modem in device manager. I don't notice any process hogging resources in task manager. My system specs are very good, dual core processor, 4GB RAM etc... I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed, can anyone help me out here? This high cpu usage seems to be having my internal fan run constantly, it hasn't done this before. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

    Also, every so often I will notice that my dvd drive light will blink and will try to read a disc for a split second even though nothing is even in there. What could that be about? It happens 2-3 times a day, never noticed it before either.

    Hi Bunty
    This definitely isn't normal, you might observe the CPU tab in "resmon" to see what is eating the CPU.
    Report back when you have your findings. :)

    What antivirus are you running? And is it using a realtime scanner?

    Also, What Security Software do have installed??

    I have had issues with some of them..

    I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed.

    My specs are:

    Intel core 2 Duo T6500 @ 2.1GHz per core.
    4GB Ram
    320 GB hard drive
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

    I don't know what else you guys would need, but just tell me.

    I ran resmon and looked at the CPU tab, I don't know what to look for but nothing looks bad that I can notice.

    I'm not great with computers so you guys will have to explain what exactly I should look for and do. I really appreciate the helps guys, thank you!

    My internet connection also seems to be lagging a lot. It just seems a lot slower, things take way longer to load. Could this also be related to the problem? This didn't happen before, it only started happing with the other problems I have.

    In resmon, under the CPU tab, you should notice immediately any spikes in utilization.

    Check these two tabs in particular; if you click on either of these tabs so the small arrow is pointing in the way shown, it'll show you in that column what is using the most amount of CPU.
    You should be able to see what's eating away the CPU there.

    Once you have established what is hogging it, click on the checkbox next to it's name and take note of the PID, you could then open a command prompt and type taskkill /f /pid #### to kill the hogging task.
    We can take things further once we have established what is causing the problem.

    I notice that perfmon.exe is using the most. audiodg.exe, avp.exe and sidebar.exe seem to pop up at the top a lot as well. Which ones are safe to kill?

    Unless these are the processes that are causing the high spike in CPU usage that you complain of in the original post, then don't kill any of them. Once you have clicked on the checkbox next to the name of 1 of the suspected processes, you'll see a orange line in the graphs to the right, this is the checked process, you can further narrow down the 4 suspects in this way.

    btw,
    permon.exe = resmon!
    avp.exe = Kasper
    audiodg.exe = Sound process
    sidebar.exe = ........
