I am currently using jv16 power tools to keep my registry tidy on my XP and Vista
64bit machines.. I will be trying this on my win 7 64bit machine tonight..

I use regvac since xp, works on 7 . I haven't had any problems. Create a system restore point.
ccleaner cleans up temp files, I rarely use it because it erases history.cache
, password files, game history. Regvac is free but ask you to buy.

Read the quick guide to CCleaner
and the check boxes documentation page. Ifyou don't want it to clear your cache etc., you can just use the registry ccleaner by itself instead. I also find that the tools section generally loads faster than Windows' Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs functions, and accesses the same uninstallers. The Startup section also appears less daunting than msconfig's for most users. I have it installed on a usb stick and use it regularly on older computers at work

Hi, I use Auslogics Registry Cleaner.
It's free, works on Windows 7 64bit, and you can restore your last clean....but I've
never had to do that.

Hi all
Why on earth do people insist on using these tools -- eventually they only lead to tears.
If your registry needs "cleaning" then the ONLY safe solution is as a previous poster has pointed out is a WINDOWS NEW CLEAN INSTALL.
In any case if you follow these simple guidelines you should never have registry problems.
1) Before installing ANY software - Image your system (that's why I'd always keep an OS on a separate partition to the data etrc).
2) install the software.
3) if it doesn't work restore the image from the backup -- no messing about with "Un-installs" etc etc.
For people with more time etc I'd use a VIRTUAL machine, install and test on that if possible and then if OK install on your real machine --still of course taking a backup image BEFORE the install.
Taking these image dumps with decent imaging software such as ACRONIS (or even Windows 7 itself) doesn't take much extra time and saves a lot of problems.
How do you know if malware / spyware or worse isnn't added to the registry by these so called "cleaners". Avoid like the plague.
