100% cpu and nothing telling what in task manager.

    Hello all,
I have an HDX16T laptop, I am having a problem after windows 7 upgrade (clean install) It is NOT a virus because not only have i bought software I have formated TWICE. And all my drivers are installed and nothing to stop this and my symptoms are,
    1. Occurs randomly while in session sometimes at startup
    2. If it occurs during session most of the time it carries on after reboot
    3. There is nothing taking up all my CPU usage but i suspect it may be SVCHOST
I thought it was the "SCVHOST.EXE" virus but spyware doctor full version does not pick up. When i am experiencing this problem (obviously not at the moment) it seems that svchost is at about 50 and the other 50 i don't know where it goes. My specs are pretty good,
    4gb of ram
    64 bit OS
    2.53 ghz dual Intel centrino
1gb Nvidia Geforce 130m with cuda

    Hi,

Can you please select the show processes from all users option and post a screenshot of the task manager showing as much detail as possible - when this is next happening - if you click on the CPU column so it sorts by this with the highest usage at top this will be more useful

With this information it should be easier to tie the issue down to a cause :)

    Hi and welcome

The next time it happens open task manager>process tab>find the svchost that is using the most>right click>create a dmp file, when it is finished. take the filke and attach it to the reply form using the paperclip shaped icon so we can debugg it

    Thanks

SVCHOST is just a windows program for hosting some services. Either you have some seriously resource heavy services or the CPU is throttling.

UPDATE1: This is post is not about the freeware version of AnVir Task Manager but rather the shareware version which you would normally have to $39.95 pay for.

UPDATE2: If you have Kaspersky you may get a warning when trying to install AnVir. It is a false positive - AnVir is 100% clean.

Update3: It seems Dealio and Yahoo Toolbars now come with AnVir Task Manager. Be sure to uncheck them during installation if you don't want them! Thanks Mansion Trash for informing me.

The genuine instance of svchost.exe can also cause 100% CPU - here's an article about that and how to solve it. Also check out the products page - Auslogics offer a very good free Task Manager alternative and there is a portable version too.
