Annoying Mouse Wheel lag when scrolling Firefox

I even got it right now when I tried to scroll down a tiny bit to this text box. I scroll all the time with the mouse wheel, probably around 90% of the time, and it's very frustrating when it actually doesn't do anything. I've had times where I've just sat there and scrolled for about an entire second, and the page just sits there. I never had this problem in XP, and it is not the mouse going bad, or the mouse wheel going bad. It doesn't matter if I "spin" the wheel as fast as I can, or just move it one groove down. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

It's a Logitech MX518, and I've installed all the drivers for it from the website.

The lag becomes very apparent if there is some sort of animation on the screen, particularly flash, however, even these small animations to the right (the smiles emoticons) seem to lag it, if that has anything to do with it.

Any ideas?

Hello and thank you for replying so promptly to my post,

It was currently set on 3. I took it down to 1 (which is far too low for what I need), then to 2, and then to 3, and now there does not appear to be any lag when I'm scrolling. Perhaps somehow that fixed it! Let's hope it retains. I'll post back if it does not.

Well, unfortunately my problem is not solved. I have now come to realize that it isn't just in Firefox - it's anywhere I try to scroll, even when I use my mousewheel to scroll through weapons in a video game. It's *very* annoying, and quite noticeable.

Any ideas?

The title of the post specifically states that the problem is in Firefox, and my followup reply indicated that this problem is throughout the computer. Regardless, I opened Advanced options in IE as you suggested, and smooth scrolling was already checked. I don't think it will have any impact on how the mousewheel interacts with Windows.

Any other ideas?

There do not appear to be any problems scrolling with a ps2 mouse with mousewheel. Everything is quite smooth. I unfortunately do not have a usb mouse with mousewheel to try.
