    Disk Cleanup and Temporary Files

I had a question about the Disk Cleanup in Windows 7 Home Premium:

The disk cleanup box says, "You can safely delete temporary files that have not been modified in over a week."

When I run disk cleanup, does it only delete files older than one week or all of them? I want to make sure that disk cleanup won't delete something that it should not delete.

Just upgraded from Vista to 7 and love Windows 7 already!

You will be ok it is very selective. If it deletes cookies from websites etc and you have to sign in again. Come back I will tell you how to avoid it in the future, but go now and use it.

    .
The only time I have ever experienced a problem with clearing temp files was during an application install that required a reboot - files that were needed to finish the process were deleted and the install failed (so I just ran it again). That was years ago though and has never been a problem with Vista or 7 in my experience. I occasionally use Ccleaner which is much more aggressive then Disk Cleanup and I have not had problems with it either. Just be aware if you delete all the cookies you will need to re-enter previously saved passwords for websites.

IF you are going to clean temp files yourself use CCleaner, I wouldn't use the one that comes with Windows: CCleaner - Home

Cannot comment on CC cleaner, but since windows 98, I never had a problem using the built in windows cleaner.

+1 i've been using CCleaner for ages now and i love it. make sure you go into settings and make check the top 3 options. it will clean your temp files when you boot up and you can do so easily just by right clicking on your Trash Bin.

Welcome to the Seven Forums, kwangso123.

    This is an old thread...

The native disk cleanup tool can remove some old Windows Updates/Patches files now

Windows disk cleanup is rather more conservative than CCleaner in that CCleaner deletes temp files older than 24 hours rather than a week. Even so I have had no problems with CCleaner.
