    Cannot create system repair disc

I am unable to create a system repair / recovery disc by either running recDisc.exe or using the option to create a recovery disk in Backup and Retore. It says System Repair Disc could not be created. "The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)" I have tried using both a blank CDr and a DVDr. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I am wondering if this is caused by how I setup my dual boot system. I installed Win 7 to a clean HD first. I noted that it set up a 100 Mb recovery partition. I then realized there was no good way to convert this to a dual boot, so wiped the partitions and set up four news ones: one for XP, one for Win7, one for data, and a 133 Mb one in hopes that the installation process would find and use it for the recovery partition. I installed XP first, and then Win7 and directed that installation to the partition I had previously setup for it. Any ideas?

    Hello TambourineMan,

You may be able to use the download in OPTION TWO in the tutorial below instead to create one.

    Hope this helps,

I am a belts and suspenders type guy. I use Terabyte's Boot It NG to image my OS partitions (which I keep small to speed the process and to reduce storage space for the images). But I like to have backups of backups, so I am downloading the system recovery disk - although I have the retail (Microsoft Store) version of win 7 Ultimate so I should not need this. Thanks for the link.

I have exactly the same problem. Have you solved this problem, if not what did you finally have to do, I'm facing the same situation.

    Solved!

I had the 0x80070057 error, too. I just got the SP1 update and still got the error. I thought it was an access issue but even using my default administrator account made no difference. This is the account that Windows 7 forces you to create upon installation or first use.

The solution for me was to activate the hidden (also called "built-in") Administrator account. Log on to that account and I could create both a repair CDROM and repair DVD. Go back to my default administrator account and I get the old error message.

Note that switching users from your regular account to the Administrator acccount does not work. You must initially log on as Administrator.

For information on activating the hidden Administrator account, see (among many sites)
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

However this fixed it from me:

    Taken from m$ technet:
Cannot make a recovery disk with recdisc.exe

Here's the correct way to fix this problem for Windows 7 (and probably Vista too!)...

    Open a command prompt.

    Type bcdedit /enum all >C:\rec.txt
(silkman: improved the command so it creates a txt file in c:\ called rec.txt to easily copy the long string - read below)

You will see an entry (probably several) that says C:\Recovery\(some long string)\winre.wim,(same long string)
(silkman: In my system the two strings, before and after, were not the same, so ended up creating two folders and copying everything twice - continue reading)

Make the following directory based on the value (some long string) that is shown above. For example purposes only:

    md c:\Recovery\0b3447fa-c429-11de-afd2-bdec487c77bb
(silkman: Did this twice in my system, may or may not be the same for you)

If folder already exists, great :)

Insert your Windows 7 install DVD and cancel any autorun prompts. Assumption is that D: is your CD/DVD drive - change accordingly ;-)

copy d:\sources\boot.wim c:\Recovery\0b3447fa-c429-11de-afd2-bdec487c77bb\winre.wim (or just open in explorer and drag d:\sources\boot.wim to the folder on your HDD and rename it to winre.wim - this is the all important part!

    copy d:\boot\boot.sdi c:\Recovery\0b3447fa-c429-11de-afd2-bdec487c77bb

    copy d:\boot\bootfix.bin c:\Recovery\0b3447fa-c429-11de-afd2-bdec487c77bb

Remember, the folder "0b3447fa-c429-11de-afd2-bdec487c77bb" will probably not be the same on your machine...run bcdedit /enum all and find the correct name of the folder from the list (which will have "C:\Recovery" and "winre.wim" in the entry)

Ruin recdisc.exe and voila you can make your recovery CD/DVD ;-)

Also, this may also fix problems booting to the recovery partition (100MB) using "F8" (W7 only) - at least it did for me :)

This worked for me, waited for the dvd creation to finish before posting this. The problem probably was that at some point, I deleted the contents of the c:\recovery folder. And I will do it again.

The recovery disk created for x64 was 164MB, so no need to waste a dvd-r disk, use a cd-r.

Are you sure you first activated the hidden administrator account? If you did, you'd now have at least two admin accounts. It is that newly revealed account that worked for me.
