    Access denied

    As administrator, yet there are folders whose access is denied to me (they have a small padlock icon). Is there a way to disable this restriction?
    Thanks

    Hello,

    Try taking ownership of those folders. Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums

    Hi Jaca,

    A few things to try here, presuming that the lock file is not another users encrypted files.

    1. Open an elevated CMD prompt and navigate to the directory in question (CD "C:\DIRECTORY IN\QUESTION")
    and type in the following (see pic)
    takeown /F . /R /A /D Y > NUL
    icacls . /grant USEROI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q

    2. Is the issue the entire drive or just a few files (I have a batch file I wrote to fix the entire drive issue)

    3. See attached the takeown script, install this reg patch and then right click on the file and take ownership.

    EDIT:- I just saw Jonathons link above, this has even more details for taking ownership and is worth the read :)

    Sweet! Was it taking ownership or doing the command line thing?

    The command is taking ownership.

    @Jaca - Great I'm glad it worked.

    @SIW2 - Well spotted, agreed and a good clarification for anyone else reading this, they are more or less the same (with the exception of the takeown /a switch to specify the user in the CMD line version), I think Jonathon meant which method exactly did Jaca use, the one he posted or the patch I posted.

    I always like to post both the reg and the command line as it's more educational and sometimes if a person is unable to install/use one method, the other works for them.

    I'm guessing that you already know this , but to clarify for others - Jaca's situation is for admin access so it's not as important this time; but if we wanted to just change it for a particular user, the CMD line is easier as we just need to change the user name, where-as the reg patch requires more changes and would be of less use once changed anyway.
