'Not Responding': A Now Common Occurrence

    Hello all:
Lately I've been having issues with system response, across nearly any/all programs. When an app, such as Firefox or Thunderbird, takes a little longer to perform an action, it goes into 'Not Responding' mode, and usually clears up within seconds. This sometimes also happens upon starting an app, for example, my file browser, xplorerČ. I open it and it is immediately in 'Not Responding' mode. Again, it clears up in seconds.

But even more recently it has become a bit more troublesome. For example, when I was composing an email last night I was working rather quickly, and after some speedy typing I quickly clicked the 'attach' button; Thunderbird hung up, and, went into 'Not Responding' mode. This time I had to eventually close the program. This happened three times. The upshot was that I had to be a bit slower and more deliberate with my actions, allowing a second between speedy typing and clicking on buttons.

In case it matters, all of my system specs are in the 'system specs' section of my profile. Just click 'siouxdax'! Also, my page file is set to 1GB currently.

So, does anyone else have this issue? Both of my machines have pretty much handled anything I've thrown at it, save for something like The Sims 3. For God's sake, I was only composing an email, opening a file browser, hopping around online, etc...

Any help/suggestions/advice is very much appreciated!

Edit: Just noticed that 'my system specs' appears at the bottom of this post as a drop-down item! Cool!

    Hi and welcome

That is happening because you dont have enough memory. The brief hang is while the data is being written to the pagefile. Abolute minimum memory requirement is 1 gig. that means no music playing, games, etc

    .
Have you tried some disk maintenance, i.e. running disk cleanup and defrag? I would also run Ccleaner to delete temp files. 1 GB of ram is not a lot and a 1 GB pagefile also sounds small. What is the "recommended" size?

    siouxdax,

I have similar problem as you do, when my computer starts to do that, I wait for a bit... If it keep on doing that, I log off, usually cures it...

Okay. Well, I can't do much about increasing the RAM right now, but should I adjust my page file? If so, what should I set it to?

    Hello Daniel,

By default your page file is managed by Windows 7, so you do not need to change anything there. Other than not having much opened at the same time, there's not much you can do other than adding more RAM.

Well, hmm. That sucks. I'll just have to slow myself down a bit until I can afford some RAM. Thanks for the input though. It is very much appreciated! And thanks for breaking the bad news to me gently. :)

You're welcome Daniel. In the mean time, you might see if this can squeeze some extra performance out of your system for you.

If you go to advanced system properties and look under the advanced tab you will see a performance settings button. If you go in there you can set to best performance and see how it goes. It will likely kill Aero and lot of other animations but it's easily undone if you want it back. There is a let windows chose setting which I would have thought would be the default. Mine is set to best appearance and I don't remember ever going in there and changing it? Another option is to set up a flash card or thumb drive for ready boost.
