Popping Sound

Hello,

I'm currently getting some popping and crackling. The issue occurs when I am scrolling through a website like reddit. As I click the scroll bar and slide it down, the sound gets worse the slower I scroll.

I am using two sound cards: Creative Labs XtremeMusic and Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1.

I upgraded my ram to 4 gigs DDR 2 6400 when I purchased Windows 7 and upgraded from my 32 bit XP Media Center Edition. The issue is pretty much resolved on my Creative Labs after the additional RAM, but the AK1, which uses heavier duty drivers, still gives me issues. It pops less when I disable my anti-virus (Avast), but I can't seem to get rid of it entirely. Crucial.com says my ram can't be upgraded beyond 4 gigs. I don't know if this matters, but when I look at my system specs, it says there is 4 gigs installed, but it's only utilizing 3.5.

I've disabled all of the visual effects and run pretty much every tweak I've found out there. The only additional upgrade I've yet to perform is on my video card which is an old ATi Radeon X600.

Will upgrading my video card help at all? Is there anything else to do, or should I just look at upgrading my entire system?

It's probably a capacitor or voltage regulator from the card OR your motherboard. Sometimes there is a high pitch "whine" too. See if you can hear that. Try to distinguish where it's coming from and replace that part. Hopefully it's not the board.

Get in close while it's happening and see if you can tell where it's coming from. It could be something else....this id just a suggestion.

Hope it helps a little, and welcome!

Hi,

Thank you.

I should have mentioned that the sound is coming from the speakers. It sounds like your suggestion is concerning a sound coming from the actual PC.

Sorry for the confusion.

I see, check for the latest drivers for your sound.

The cables from the computer to the speakers is also a suspect.

I've installed all the latest drivers. The cables headed from my AK1 to my speakers (Mackie MR5's) are unbalanced TRS->XLR's.

The issue is there whether I'm using my speakers, or my headphones.

It does get better when I shut off my anti virus and there was great improvement after upgrading my ram, but I'm just having a hard time understanding how my dual core 2.8 processor, along with 4 gigs of DDR 2 6400 would still give me performance issues. Could replacing my video card help reduce the burden on my RAM?

Not with 4 GB of RAM....it can't hurt to upgrade your card, but I doubt it will solve the popping noise.

It may be something to do with the actual sound card (or onboard sound) I wish I could be more helpful.

You're fine.

For the most part, everything plays okay as long as I don't try to do any scrolling. As soon as I start clicking and scrolling through a website or around my music software, it pops a bunch. It's just annoying.
