check disc for errors - wont engage

I try to click on computer - properties - tools - check disc for errors - but when I go to click the - automatically fix file errors - it says cannot perform function while windows is in use do you want to perform disc check next time you start up? will that work? the other alternate is to - check for and recover bad sectors - I was advised not to use this option...why?

Normal activity. you cant run it from within an OS. Simply put its asking do you want to do this at the next reboot. Yes it works, yes you can force a dismount but you really dont want to (can lead to weirdness). Check yes and on next reboot it will perform the chkdsk before windows starts.
