Save a Windows session

Is there any way to save a session of Windows, clean reboot the machine (for updates for example), and then restore that session?

Hibernate saves the Windows session to the disk and restores it upon booting, so there must be a way.

I'm pretty sure i remember reading about a way to do that on xp with some sort of hibernate hack, but havent seen anything for 7.

Never thought about that. It should be possible, thinking that all the information needed is saved in one file, hiberfil.sys, in the root of the OS partition.

Interesting, something to talk tomorrow with colleagues.

all i can think of woul involve putting it into hybernate then copying the file from a command prompt or live cd to an alternate location. then booting again restarting for updates then put it into hybernate an loading up the live cd or command prompt again and replacing the current hybernation file with the one you copied previously. of course to make that easier a program could be written and you boot into that instead sort of like a hybernate session manager.
