Disk check has been canceled on reboot?

    To All,

I have been trying to run a disk check in Windows 7 (I have a Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980 with Windows 7 64bit) through a program called tuneup utility program, although in this case I am unsure if it matters.

No matter which option I chose (either fixing bad sectors or not), I am asked to run this on reboot.

When I reboot my laptop, the disk check momentarily begins and then I see "Disk check has been canceled" (or something similar).

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I must do to make it stop?

I read somewhere (I cannot find the link now) that a wireless keyboard may sometimes cause this, but as I have a laptop, I am wondering if it is my wireless mouse?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Sincerely,

    KC

    Hello KC,

Are you able to run Disk Check (chkdsk) normally through Windows 7 without using that program?

    Disk Check

As a test to see if it's your wireless mouse, you can unplug the USB receiver from the laptop for it before restarting the computer to allow chkdsk to run.

Keyboard probably doesn't matter. Have you tried running a chkdsk from within win 7?

Then disconnect the mouse and use the internal touch pad and try again to run disk check. BTW why run a third party software to do a job that is easy to do within Windows 7?

I guess because it was easy to simply run it from the utility program while doing system maintenance.

My guess is I will have the same issues running it directly in Windows 7 but I'll find out this evening.

I will also try disconnecting the mouse.

    Thank you for responding! :)

Disk check has been cancelled on reboot?

I have had the same problem on my HP G70250US laptop, however, I have no external keyboards, or etc. Any suggestions? I have tried to run within the program, but it states it needs to be next time it boots. BUT it continues to cancel. Done everything I know how to do.

I was unable to get Windows 7 to perform the operation without it advising a reboot and on reboot I had the same failure as before (which is what I was suspecting might happen).

    mitchell65,

Then disconnect the mouse and use the internal touch pad and try again to run disk check.
When a scheduled the disk check, I rebooted and removed the usb mouse before windows started but regrettably it did not help.

    caring1951,

I believe there are many talented people in these forums.

I am hopeful that a solution might be found.

Is there another program out there thart might overcome this issue?

Can maybe a disk check be run in DOS Command prompt window and if so what would be the root directory to start from (C:\?) and what should be typed to get it to check the entire hard drive and fix any errors?

    KC,

You can see if you are able to boot to a command prompt at startup using your Windows 7 installation disc, then use the chkdsk C: /f /r command.

    Brink,

I booted in safe mode with command prompt and typed in the check disk command as you have listed above but received an error stating that it could not run because the disk volume was in use.

I was asked if I wanted to try on the next reboot (y/n) and I of course typed "y".

I might have been a little tired, for I tried it twice, but on each reboot I did not even perceive Windows trying to run check disk as I do when I ask it to do so from within Windows 7 itself.

It is as if tying "y" had no bearing.

I have spoken with Toshiba Tech Support and they are aware of this issue.

They are trying to develop an in-house solution which might be available next month.

I guess I will need to wait.

I thank everyone for their advice.
