Core i7

I find it fascinating that my core i7 can play a 10gig 1080p mkv file and have a cpu load of 1%.

Meanwhile on my old Pentium 4 3.2ghz processor the file will bring the cpu down to it knees?

On your old P4 did you have the Nvidia GTX 285?
And to play that MKV file what are you using?

file size doesn't matter. bitrate and res is what matters.

even your old P4 should play HD content fine. does your video player use DXVA?
