'Recovery Disc'

When I purchased my new computer, with Windows 7, I made a 'System Repair Disc' & a complete 'System Image'. Now it's asking/reminding me to make a 'Recovery Disc'. Is that different from the first two?

.
Sounds like the process where you duplicate the contents of the recovery partition on DVD in case the hard disk goes. It's provided by the system builder (HP, Dell, etc) and not part of Windows per say.

Hello Skostro,

It sounds like it may be reminding you to create a set of OEM Factory Recovery Discs to use to do a factory restore of Windows 7 with just in case something should happen to your recovery partition. If you wanted a clean install, then a set of OEM Factory Recovery Discs would be good to have. Especially if you need to replace the HDD.

OEM Factory Recovery Discs completely different than the other two.
  • The 'System Repair Disc' only allows you to try and repair your current installation. It will not reinstall Window 7.
  • The 'System Image' is a clone of the selected hard drive and partitions. It will restore Windows 7 and your HDD completely back to like it was when the system image was created. It can be better to use than a factory restore since all of your programs and current drivers are included in the system image instead.
What brand is your computer? I'll post back full instructions from your computer manufacturer's website on how to for your reference.

Hope this helps,

Shawn

I would also like to suggest that you actually make the DVD's too. I believe HP only gives you one shot at making them. At the very least, it will keep you from having to deal with their support monkeys. HP support is absolutely horrible.

Brink,
I'm still a little confused.
'System Repair Disc' - made one on day one.
'System Image', made one on day one, it took 5 dvd's to complete that process.
'Recovery Disc' - is this different from the System Image? How many dvd disc will that take?
While we're on the subject, could you explain the differences between all 3?

MadMaxData,
You mentioned this - "I would also like to suggest that you actually make the DVD's too. I believe HP only gives you one shot at making them".
What dvd's are you referring to?
Thanks

Skostro,

See post above for more on this.

Usually it will create two DVDs.
  • First one for the Windows 7 Recovery Disc
  • Second one for the Applications and Drivers Disc

Thank you and it's done.
Took 3 dvd discs to complete that task.
I now have:

1 disc for a System Repair
5 discs for a System Image
3 discs for a Factory Recovery
1 external drive for Computer Back-ups

Anything else I should prepare for?
