    MsMpEng.exe = CPU Usage 100%

    Hi, i keep noticing my cpu is always at 100% and when i look into Task Manager>Processes Tab, MsMpEng.exe (in CPU column) is over 80+ and gives mixed numbers. That i believe causes my cpu at 100%.

    Is there a way i can really calm my cpu and make the process "MsMpEng.exe' disable or lower its usage on cpu. And what is that process used for?

    It's a windows Defender and or microsoft security essentials process.

    MsMpEng.exe is MSE. It must be scanning. Look into the MSE settings. There must be something wrong. E.g. scheduled scan should be set to quick scan. If you do not have MSE, it is Defender.

    Yeah, i just found out now. It is MSE. Only happens when i am scanning. But then theres svchost.exe that is also causing the cpu to be high.

    There are a ton of svchost.exe - you have to find out which .dll(s) it is running. E.G with Process Explorer or task manager.

    svchost.exe is pretty normal to have multiple instances and somewhat high usage. It's normal, different services running under the svchost.exe

    Task Manager - Show Services Running under svchost.exe

    Thanks for the replies. I guess its just normal. And another thing, do cpu that are quad cores get to 100% with MsMpEng.exe and svchost.exe happenning?

    No, not really. Well, I guess it all depends on what the cpu model is, but still probably out of the normal range. At least mine wouldn't even approach that.

    I have a laptop with a single core processor. So i guess for me, it be normal. But for a duo-quad core, it wouldnt.
