Windows 7: Terrible performance on video playback

Windows 7 - 64bit

Terrible performance on video playback

Hello,
I recently upgraded to a Windows 7 - 7077, 64 bit

I managed to install almost all drivers.
I also installed the newest drivers for my Nvidia Geforce 7300 SE

I am experiencing very very slow performance on all types of videos, encoded with different codecs.
Worst is on 720p and 1080p AVI, MKV, M2TS, MP4 etc

I tried most of the famous codecs. For now the best is Divx 7.1
I also tried with ffdshow2009, ac3, dts decoders;
also the recommended in this forum
Win7codecs_v107 + Win7x64Components_v115
still the same thing.

I tried most of the famous players.

It is slightly better if I decrease the desktop to 800x600

So on some videos I experience 2.7 fps !!!
That is 1 of 10 frames displayed.
Even the old style 1000kbs videos appear on frames

On xp all these were running fluently.
On my laptop (a much weaker machine) with Windows 7 - 32bit they also run better (although not as good as with XP)

I tried almost everything. And even with the fastest codec and the fastest player, and the worst settings, the performance is terrible.

Any suggestions will be wellcome.

Im feeling I ll have to go back to XP for the next 1-2 years ...

Now I switched the Windows Theme to - Windows classic, which simplified a lot of the displayed windows. (previous was an aero theme)

This gave a lot to the performance.
Still all 720 and 1080p videos are on frames - around 12-20 fps, depending of the screen resolution and the codec.

I guess it would be great for future implementation a full screen program to turn off the aero themes. Just as an option for slower videocards.

I would honestly say that you need a better graphics card, your would hardly manage to run Areo with Low end and very old Graphics card, never mind anything else. I would suggest a good midrange card like the Nvidia 9600GT 1Gig and another 2 Gigs of Ram and I can guarantee you will see a huge improvement.

No one else is seeing this at all. Perform a completely clean install of certified build 7000 from Microsoft (not bittorrent), use the default video driver and codecs. Try to play your video. If for some reason your video card is not detected, use only drivers shown to be for Windows 7 (preferred) or Vista from Microsoft Update Catalog. Again, do not install codec packs. None are designed for Windows 7. Many are just very poorly engineered (AKA hacks).

If with a known build, completely cleanly installed, and sensible drivers and no codec packs installed you are still seeing this please report back. Otherwise create system restore points before each thing you add so when you find the 3rd-party culprit you can back out the change.

I've got a 7200 in this junk box over here that runs h.264 720p without a problem. He's got codec cruft and I fear some of that's irreversible.

I had the same issue with some AVI files juttering. I had installed shark007 codecs for windows 7 then set the configuration for AVI to allow shark007 (only 2 options available, 1 was windows default) to render movies rather than it's current default render. The same can be applied to MKV & other formats. This solved the problem & now all AVI play effortlessly even on my cr@ppy rig

Hope this helps

i dont mean to hijack the thread but just a quick question regarding graphics cards im using a 7900gt but i have a 8500gt card and want to swap them over is it just a matter of removing the drivers shutting down swapping the cards and reboot?

Hi murphy25,

You should just be able to swap them over. Windows will automatically detect that a new card is inserted when booting. It will start in 'Standard VGA' but will connect to Windows Update to install the new drivers.

Hope this helps
