W7 Optimization

Hi i've visited this forum several times to look for clues on how to fix problems with my computer and finally decided to sign up cause it looks like a great forum anyways im having speed troubles like i guess many others are and i've actually been thinking about switching back to XP but i like windows 7 so much better so my question is... is there any way i could speed up my computer without any major changes like in the way it looks and feels (main part i love about it besides how simple it is) i keep maxing out at 70-100% CPU and 70-100% GPU (according to my SpeedMeter gadget) i've tried simply tweaking it for performance but it never gives me the boost i need untill everything is disabled... and i cant exactly overclock it cause it'd most likely fry it...

Here's my system specs...

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 86x
System: Compaq Presario Model:GN578AA-ABA SR5233WM
Processesor: Intel Pentium D 2.80 Ghz
RAM Installed: 1 GB
(i know bare minimum and completely horrible but even if i upgraded it'd only be able to go up to 2 GB)
Available RAM: 243 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 1.99 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.00 GB

Please help if you can i really dont wanna burn out my computer using this OS but i love it sooooooooooo much

One of my early beta test computers is a AMD 1.8ghz 32bit with 2gb ram.
It's not the fastest box running, but it surfs the net smoothly. I added a 4gb USB
Flash Drive set up with Ready Boost, which I think helped some. I still feel it's better than XP ! I don' do any over-clocking ! Just enjoy Windows 7 the best way you can !

I'm pretty certain that the main reason you're having trouble w/ your computer is because Aero requires 2GB of ram to run smoothly.

You should really add some more ram and/or get a 1-2GB flash drive to use as a readyboost drive. Readyboost doesn't seem to do much on my machine, but I'm guessing it'll make a huge difference on a lower end machine.

That's your problem. With only 1Gb installed, and the use of on-board graphics which uses even more system, you are bound to have performance problems. You can't blame Windows 7, however. Windows 7 is designed to take advantage of today's hardware, not legacy hardware built for 10+ year old operating systems.

my computer actually isn't that old it was built in in 2005 at latest but i do understand what you mean... technology has already surpassed my computers performance so i need to get a better one soon, i could upgrade to 2 GB of ram but a extra GB really isn't worth it since 2 GB is the minimum today, anyways i did switch back to windows XP and set it up with a custom theme, and start menu and made everything slightly transparent so it looks great and then i started testing it and found that the performance was great as far as speed. games no longer lagg as much, applications and windows are snappier, and i hardly ever max out.

But i do gotta say 7 is the best Windows OS by far and i plan to put it back on my computer if i decide to get a more up to date one

2Gb and a 1/2-way decent graphics card will offer significant and definitely noticeable performance boost across the board. You are currently crippled by a relatively small amount of RAM that is further straddled with graphics processing chores. Almost any, even an entry level graphics card will likely result in improved performance. The GPU will likely be better and the card will come with its own RAM tweaked for graphics. This frees up system RAM for a little RAM boost and allows the CPU to hand off more graphics tasks - and handing off tasks takes very little CPU horsepower.

The downside is more hardware places a greater demand for watts - so a new PSU may be in order. You need to see what you have now - and by see, I mean you have to look at the label on the PSU.

Ok im back on windows 7 cuz i figured out how to cut down on most of the ram now it runs 100MB slower then xp (was 650 MB available on XP now its 550MB on 7 all programs were shutdown for the test) anyways im thinking about buying a graphics card and maybe a new psu and another ram to match the 1 i have (or should i buy 2 and replace the 1 i have?) anyways i dont have to much money cuz im still looking for a job anyways i would just like to know if i could get any recommendations since i've never upgraded a computer this much...
