IMO, many of these things cause more trouble than they're worth. They either don't do the job properly (or effectively, or at all!!), or they aren't used properly by the user, and cause much grief and re-installs.
Cleaning out the junk on your drives, defragging often, turning off Windows functions that you don't need, and minimizing the stuff in the system tray are very good ways to keep your PC in good shape. In the end, though, the best way to get a performance boost out of your PC is to add more RAM, or an SSD, and make sure that your drivers are all up to date.
If you still want to go tweaking and tuning, please make sure to do a full backup first. And most importantly, that includes backing up the registry.

Bill, I think these things are a waste of time at best and can actually degrade or screw up your system at worst.
Win 7 is a totally new OS and the old XP "fixes" do not apply. Windows manages memory and services very, very well along with managing the registry. The MS engineers got Win 7 right. There no tweaks that speed up Win 7; therefore no speed up program is going to work.
Depending on how you use your PC there may be some services that you can disable; BUT Win 7 starts the services it needs and closes the ones it does not need. You will find no gain that you can measure.
To sum it up, there is no third party program out there that will speed up Win 7 and the risk to screw up your system is great if you use one.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I do use CCleaner, and the registry check in it, and the only thing I use for security is MSE. Windows 7 has been the smoothest transition to a new OS I've ever experienced, and I have had them all (except I skipped Vista) since Windows 3.1.
I just want to make sure I am staying on top of things. As always, thanks to everyone on this board. It is an invalueable resource.

Bill, I recommend using any registry cleaner with great caution. You can end up deleting keys that the registry cleaner thinks are useless; but in fact those keys are needed. Yes, I've done this! The only keys I delete are those left over from programs I have unistalled - and then ony after I have backed up the registry and researched those keys. One does not need a registry cleaner with Win 7. The impact is beyond minuscule.

So CCleaner is not needed with 7 either. Is this what you are saying. If not, I am uninstalling it. I don't want anything an my computer to complicate things. Anyone else have a conflicting opinion?

Ccleaner is a good program for deleting unnecessary files and junk. Win 7 does not need a registry cleaner. It handles the registry differently from XP. The registry does not get bogged down. The few keys that you delete using a registry cleaner make no difference in the overall registry.
I would suggest Revo uninstaller for uninstalling 32 bit programs. When it uninstalls a program, it deletes the registry keys associated with that program.
Unless you are really familiar with the registry and really know what you are doing, I recommend that you do not use any registry cleaner, Ccleaner included.
