win 7 64bit clean install then massive slowdown

    Hi everyone,

I am able to install windows 7 64 bit although it does take a long time to install.
After booting for the first time the windows operation feels normal and startup and shut down occur quickly. After a second boot into windows things begin to slow down to the point where responses to inputs including ctrl alt del and pulling up task manager or performance monitor can take minutes to complete. It is especially bad after pulling up internet explorer for the first time, and even worse after I started ie 64 bit for the first time.

I originally put together the computer in January and all was working okay. In mid march the computer began to suffer, and after obtaining errors with memtest I sent the ram back to ocz and they sent me new. I haven't had much time to work on it until recently, and have specifically attempted to install all of the newest drivers from the manufacturers as soon as I was able to update them. The computer came to a crawl shortly there after, later the same day as the clean install and driver updates.

Presently, I am attempting to see if it is software (win 7 64 bit and drivers) or hardware related. I am currently installing XP Pro, which is seeming to take longer than usual. I want the 64 bit windows to work in order to best use the ram and quad cores. I also have 2x 2gb Corsair ram, same timings and voltage as the OCZ ram to put into the fixed system.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose and move forward would be extremely helpful as this is the first major system that I have built entirely on my own.

    Build:

    Asus P5N-D motherboard
    Intel Q9550 Core 2 quad @2.83 ghz 12Mb 1333FSB
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB 32MB/SATA-3G

    2 X 2GB OCZ Vista Performance DDR2 PC6400 800Mhz
    & 2x 2gb corsair xms2 DDR2 PC6400 800Mhz

    OCZ ModXStream-Pro 700W PSU
    Currently 1 in , but have 2x EVGA GeForce 8500 GT 1Gb

Zalman CNPS 9900 CPU cooler & 2 Case Fans

XP Install is also very slow

    Hi everyone, again,
xp install finished and is also very slow. It was also slow during the final networking setup menus. After clicking next on the first menu it took minutes to bring up the next one. It was also very slow to load internet explorer to attempt to download drivers and mozilla.

Does this mean it is hardware, or could still include software problems?

Likely hardware. Test the RAM for 5-6 passes (or overnight) with memtest86.

Then use HD maker's diagnostics/repair utility to run full CD scan.

Check the Event Viewer and Performance-Diagnostics logs for repeat errors. Click thru WEI score at Computer>Properties to use Advanced Tools to get to P-D log, look for cued issues at top and Generate a System Health Report.

    Tests

    Hi Gregrocker,
    Thanks for the help,

I ran Western Digital's Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool and no errors were detected.
I have also ran a few combinations of memory modules and board slots and so far no errors detected. I did have an issue with Memtest 86 in that it froze when I attempted to run the multiple cores option. I have since started with a single cpu option and then changed the configuration to a sequential core mode.

I have not yet reinstalled windows 7. Afterward, I will post the results of the P-D log and the health report.

    Fixed Somewhat but still errors

    Hi everyone,
sorry for the late response but i have been pretty busy with work lately.

I have followed your suggestions and have also been looking at other forums including those on the asus website listed with my motherboard. One post explained how the processor was running so hot that the heat sink left him a burn and that after a week of attempting to diagnose and fix similar problems to mine he put the optional fan that was to only be used with water cooling on. So I went ahead and put my clip on fan on as well.

Also, I tested all of my ram modules individually with memtest and no errors. I put two ram modules in and manually set the voltages and timing settings in the bios due to suggestions for my specific motherboard being crappy with auto settings. I may have to still up the voltage and manually set the bus speeds to the clock settings, as i have used CPUZ and see that my speeds are about half of what they are built for.

After these two fixes, my computer is usable, before i was using a netbook to provide posts, this is the first from the built desktop.

However, there are still problems, again seemingly random and temporary freezing of the computer up to the length of a whole minute, especially when first attempting to open performance monitor in the midst of the first slowdown. I get not responding errors in whatever programs were open at the time ranging from paint to internet explorer.

I have monitored performance monitor and my disk graph goes crazy high and low but stay high for extended periods of time. I pull up what is causing the isssues and it is System and svchost processes. The worst system processes include C:\$Logfile(NTFS Volume Log) but also includes performance/diagnostic log events

Performance monitor shows disk spikes of 100 kB /s which quickly diminish and are replaced by other processes. Again these mainly occur in system and svchost.exe

Sorry for the belated post and thanks in advance for any help.

Also if you, gregrocker, could explain more in what you wanted for P-D logs

Work through any repeat errors in the Event Viewer>Admin View and Performance Diagnostics log located at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools. You can Generate a System Health Report there, too.

You have Hardware issues which will get more attention from experts on your mobo in Hardware forum.

Final Post before new Thread in Hardware

Thanks for the tip, I will post in hardware next. I will follow up with my event viewer and health report in txt files that are attached. I think the main problem is a sharp increase in disk response times in the thousands, which i think are milliseconds, so actual seconds of wait time, on processes sometimes numbering in the dozens. I will reply to this post with a link to my new one but do you think that it is the hard drive or something else? Also, do you know what the blue line is that is drawn on the performance monitor graphs?

Thank you for the rep and report that your HD is the problem. How were you able to confirm this?

If you are within a year of purchase WD tech support should help you test and repair if possible, possibly even replace.
