win 7 64bit clean install then massive slowdown
Hi everyone,
I am able to install windows 7 64 bit although it does take a long time to install.
After booting for the first time the windows operation feels normal and startup and shut down occur quickly. After a second boot into windows things begin to slow down to the point where responses to inputs including ctrl alt del and pulling up task manager or performance monitor can take minutes to complete. It is especially bad after pulling up internet explorer for the first time, and even worse after I started ie 64 bit for the first time.
I originally put together the computer in January and all was working okay. In mid march the computer began to suffer, and after obtaining errors with memtest I sent the ram back to ocz and they sent me new. I haven't had much time to work on it until recently, and have specifically attempted to install all of the newest drivers from the manufacturers as soon as I was able to update them. The computer came to a crawl shortly there after, later the same day as the clean install and driver updates.
Presently, I am attempting to see if it is software (win 7 64 bit and drivers) or hardware related. I am currently installing XP Pro, which is seeming to take longer than usual. I want the 64 bit windows to work in order to best use the ram and quad cores. I also have 2x 2gb Corsair ram, same timings and voltage as the OCZ ram to put into the fixed system.
Any suggestions on how to diagnose and move forward would be extremely helpful as this is the first major system that I have built entirely on my own.
