Hey guys,

Im in the process of building a new computer right now. Now, I was wondering a couple things.

First, is it possible to install Windows 7 on a fresh new build with parts just installed into case?

How would I install Windows 7 to something like that?

Was also wondering if Windows 7 was having alot of problems or would it run smoothly on my new build? Mostly going to be using it for games, movies, internet.

Heres my new build:

ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3
OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
SAPPHIRE 100245HDMI Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner
Acer X193W+BD Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
WESTERN DIGITAL WD3200AAKS 320GB SATA 7200 RPM 16MB Hard Drive
Bfg Tech 550W EPS12V Power Supply - BFGR550WLSPSU

So, will it run smooth? Are most people having problems? Would it be worth just getting Vista instead?

Thanks For all help!

It is entirely possible. Just download the ISO, burn it and start install.

Do a custom full install.

You could have a flawless install or you could have a problem. Remember that WIn 7
RC 1 is not the version that will be released to the public. It is a test version

Do most computers install and work just fine? Or is it the other way around. Should I buy Vista just to be safe or you think itll prob be ok?

Also, could you explain the ISO file process? Does it download from the site in ISO format or...?

Thanks!

When you download from the official Microsoft site, the file will be a .ISO file.

Also download ImgBurn (free program). Just google for it.

Install the Imgburn program.

Start image burn and select your downloaded .iso file and select your DVD
drive as output and start the burn.

That's all there is to it.

Based upon number of issues and members of various Win 7 forums, I would say
the vast majority of people are not having problems. Most people who get it installed
correctly with no issues never visit these forums.

I know there is an issue with Nvidia video cards and some other minor issues, but
for the rig you are building I think you will be fine.

Thanks for the advice. I understand now.

Just curious, but do you know what most majority problems with win 7 come from? Are they mostly similar or vastly differant?

Tks!

Mostly similar. I think the vast majority are for people using PCI-E Nvidia graphics cards.

Well I still use XP also for some apps that just won't cooperate with Vista.

Vista is fine. Never had a problem with it.

Win 7 so far is fine. Has some new features I want to experiment with. Seems
stable enough. I add 1 new app about every 2 days to see if it shakes out any issues.

I also do a full drive backup prior to any app install or Microsoft updates so
that I can safely restore the machine to a point where it was stable.

Do you have any advice for win7 on a new system build? Updates for anything? Anything at all?

Or think i may want to get vista and wait for the retail version to come out for win7?

Well, I would go ahead and install win 7. It'll be good till after the public is able to
purchase it. As long as it runs ok for you I would keep using it. I would however invest in a product called Acronis and an external hard drive to back your entire system
at least once a week. Remember, it's a test system so if you put your production, valued data on win 7 you should definitley have a backup plan. I backup once a week.

I would also set Windows update to inform you of new updates, but not to install them so you can decide whether you need them or not.

Thats good advice. Thats what ill do. Got plenty of externals laying around to use. And shouldnt have anything too important. Just building for games and watching movies.

Thanks again!

Recommend installing 7 and using PowerDVD for movies, since it has upscaling options for video like doubling the framerate and other goodies. My favorite player of the bunch.

As for it running smoothly per your question: Windows 7 runs smoothly even on my other machine which is P4 1.5 gHz no hyperthreading, 768 mb RDRAM, 6200A-LE video....so judging by that...:D

As I am typing on a custom built myself, I have just one thing to mention:

Before installing the RC, I would make sure to spend a little time examining and downloading the latest software drivers for your motherboard and video card. This can be as simple as visiting the makers websites. After you do that, you can then Google to see if anyone has had any troubles with W7 and your same hardware.

With the system I built - even tho I had one of the latest parts on the market - there were several updates.

My beast installed W7 beta so smooth I thought there was something wrong. I didn't NEED the latest drivers mind you- and odds are you may not either. But if you are going to start from scratch, I figured at install was the best time to get as up-to-speed as I could get.

Good luck with your new build! It looks to be a performer!

Only problem, is that I wont have any OS on this new build at all to install any drivers. Or do you not need an OS to install drivers or updates?

Kinda confuses me.

The win 7 install dvd will have drivers onit. The question is whether or not they will
work correctly. To be safe, people are downloading win7 drivers from specific vendors of their equipment (usually disk related). They download them on another machine and probably put them on cd so if the win 7 fails or has problems they can try to load the drivers at win 7 install time.

About installing the drivers...

When do I install drivers??

Do I install the drivers after I install Win 7 onto the new build?

Or..

Do I install the drivers before I install Win 7 onto new build?

Or..

Do I install the drivers during Win 7 install?

A little confused...

Also, you guys spoke of drivers from sites that were specific for my product and for win 7...where do I find these and how do I install these drivers??

Thanks for your help!
