It could be that your Windows XP machines do not have the correct codec to play the movie. is the movie trying to play in Windows media player? If so you may want to use VLC media player. It will play anything.

Also, you may want to check the permissions on the shared folder. users will need the read and execute permission.

I did try openining the video files using different players on the windows xp but non work.
this behaviour is repeated also if i try to open the video files on windows 7 from any operating systems like Mac ...etc

i do feel like windows 7 starter is not allowing anyone to stream videos of it. am really stuck with this.

All your really doing is sharing a resource. What user account are you using to access the shares from the windows 7 box? What permissions does that user account have? if you put a text file or any other file in that share can you open it and read it / make changes to it and save it on the share?

Did you enable the streaming share features in WMP?

I can only hope that you set up a workgroup for your mixed OP system network as Homegroups is only made for Windows 7 machines. Other than that, if you can't see the other machines then most likely your A/V software is blocking them. Often times you need to uninstall your A/V or configure the A/V's firewall to allow a range of IP's through the firewall.

You do realize that Windows 7 starter has many limitations.

The relevant one is highlighted below in bold. So, sorry to say that it looks like streaming does not work with Win 7 starter. :(

Windows 7 Starter does not include:

* Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the Windows Basic or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
* Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
* The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
* 64 bit version
* Multi-monitor support.
* DVD playback.
* Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
* Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
* Domain support for business customers.
* XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

Check this link for more Win 7 starter limitations.
