I didn't know anyone even considered doing different. I wouldn't be able to stand not having it on 24/7.

Mine's always on 24/7 too, but I'll occasionally logon to the router and do a reboot through the router diagnostics to clear it out. Keeps it running smooth especially if download speeds slowdown a bit or I get a bit of packet loss.

We have frequent enough power outages to take care of that. :D

maybe to save power people might turn it off.

if i didn't do so much p2p i would think about connecting it to my "smart" ups that turns off peripherals when my desktop is off.

imeem, not really. If your router is getting hot for some reason, it might. When it comes down to it, saying having it on all the time is bad is like saying having your refrigerator on all the time is bad.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
Mine has been on for over 3 years. I'm quite sure 99.999 percent of people leave them on so.... (wondering what the other .0001 is doing)

Unfortunately, being forced to turn it off. My wife even turns off the LED nightlights in order to "conserve energy"... I told her the reason I bought the expensive LED nightlights was to leave them on all the time.

Of course, my old DSL Westell Versalink got hella hot, so I started turning it off since I thought leaving it on would shorten its life... started a bad precendence. So, now I basically have to :zip:.

Whatcha gonna do?

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention... the computer? Off when not in use, even if next use is going to be same day.   And the "aircraft argument"?... didn't work.

Not sure if it is sleep or hibernate, but one of the two (or both) clearly shows that my computer is still on. Why? Along with my new computer, I swindled in a new mouse and gamepad (kb, not controller... see my specs). Both have bright blue LEDs that shine upwards when powered, illuminating the ceiling, and they stay on when the computer is not truly off. Unplugging the gamepad is not too hard (plugged into extension USB cable), but the mouse is a different story.

If you happen to know how to power down the USB ports, I'm all ears... though I don't quite know what I would accomplish with it... it would still be unusable and not able to remote since the modem is off.
