High Temps for ACPI and Processors.

I'm running a Toshiba A200 with T7200 (Duo at 2.00GHz) with a GeForce Go 7300 graphics card and 2GB of RAM. After getting the motherboard replaced twice (due to overheating) while still under warranty my laptop was able to play 720p videos and handle flash games/Youtube no problem. I don't know what happened, but suddenly everything was getting ridiculously hot and once again I was stuck dealing with overheating. My graphics card reached temps of 55C while my processors lowest temp was 75C and constantly reaching up to the high 90s. I brought it back and they kept saying nothing wrong (which was ridiculous). Finally the thermal grease was replaced which solved the graphics card issue, but my ACPI and processors are still overheating constantly. I can't even play certain games or watch certain youtube videos, let alone a full movie.

I opened my laptop up in order to check for dust (and blew into it a million times), but there is no blockage. I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or a problem with the drivers, but if anyone has experienced something similar please share what you did to solve it.

He said the thermal grease was replaced for both the graphics card and processors. I bought some anyway, but I've never done it myself so I didn't want to mess it up if that isn't even the problem.

Sorry for double posting but I'm really desperate here. Would disabling the ACPI do anything to help? I'm wondering if I'm just getting the wrong temperature readings or something.

I don't know, go ahead and try it.

What is the ventilation like in your case? Make sure cables are not blocking the air flow. If you have a case fan, be sure to use it.

AsuCaga,

Please help us out some by filling out your system specs. Following is excellent and a program that I use. (It also show temps)

SPECCY- System Information Tool
http://www.piriform.com/speccy

FREE. Operating System, CPU and Temp, Ram, Motherboard, Graphics, Hard Drives, Optical Drives, Audio, Peripherals, Network info.
Simply put—this is the best and it’s free!

Now look at the laptop where the intake and exhaust vents are. Make sure that they are not blocked.

Right now I'm outside in a beer garden in Texas and I make sure there is a fan blowing on my laptop.

There are the specs from that program, plus some graphs made using CPUID to show how extreme these temps get.

Well, the G72M (the actual chipset of the 7300Go) is listed as part of the known "overheating" laptop chips that nvidia has made over the years (it started with the G84 and 86, and has since extended to include other families, including the G72 and 72M). I don't doubt the CPU/GPU combo in that machine is going to fall prey to the heat/warping issue (which causes solder to break down, and ultimately no video display eventually) - Dell and HP (and nvidia) got sued over these laptops, which is why HP (and others) extended warranties on some of their laptop lines. I'd have Toshiba check that out again to make sure it's not damaged, because from your description and knowing (firsthand) about how these panned out a year or so ago, you may very well be experiencing the beginnings of the classic nvidia chipset death symptoms (the CPU and GPU are cooled by the same cooler/heatsink, so when the video issues start the CPU heats up as well, compounding the problem).

The warranty is used up, and after a new coating of thermal grease my video card has stayed a lot lower than it used to. Unless you are saying that the damage has already been done and now that is what is causing the constant overheating of the ACPI and CPU. If that is the case I might as well get a new laptop =\. Thanks a lot for the replies!

Well, yes and no - I would continue to use the laptop until it's not feasible (either hardware problems or age), and then replace it. Just know you do have a potential problem on your hands in the future, whether it be near or far.

Warranty or not -- contact Toshiba for possible solutions. Toshiba was always good about sending out notices of free replacements when a unit was detected as defective from design--quite different that the policies of Dell and HP.

With the excessive temp you have, immediately get a small desk fan and let it blow directly on your laptop. Those temps will destroy your notebook.

Here's a link that will explain how to update your system specs;
Forum Rules and info- Please Read! - Windows 7 Forums

I should have included this link to start with. Actually, we need an actual tutorial dedicated to this subject as every newbee overlooks this. I know that I did and only found it by accident one day and then updated and completed the info.

Be sure to backup very soon because at the temps you have, your notebook could go out any second.

Sorry about that, I think I joined before you made that post XD! I didn't realize there was a section in our profile dedicated to filling out Specs. I'll try calling them although they charge a 30 dollar fee, so I'm going to make sure I have all the info about this graphics card issue.

PS. I already have a desk fan which is probably one of the only things saving it. Thanks for the advice though ^_^
