Win 7 renamed/moved all my new music folders while i was out to lunch!

How can this even happen?

I downloaded from zip files 16 new albums--all by the same artist (an audio series)--named those 16 albums as I wished, divided them into 4 folders (4 albums in each) and named those folders as I wished. All in my MY Music folder. Then I went to lunch.

I came back, the folders were no longer there. After I did a search, I found them in a new general folder named by the computer, the 4 main folders were gone and all the names on the 16 album folders were changed.

The important fact on this is that none of the music had been played by any player. Why this is important is that not only these 16 new albums but also 12 other unplayed albums (divided into 3 folders of 4 albums each) were also all moved/name changed. I had had those albums on my computer for weeks and they happily stayed put.

All changes were made to some internal name of the files--that is to say, the main folder to which they were all dumped (with no more 4 to a folder delineation) was some name from the original files.

It would certainly seem I either got the weirdest of bugs or I hit some command that said "take all my unplayed music and make it the downloaded name instead of the name I gave it and put it all in 1 folder."

This also happened to me one other time with itunes. But there, i ripped some cds, put them in folders as I wished, and each time I played something the name was automatically changed and it was put in a new folder; same thing, some original name from the rip. I thought this was an itunes problem or I had hit some command, but these are very similar issues--just that here the names/folders changed were unplayed and with itunes the changes only happened after playing.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

now take ownership of your whole user folder c:/users/YOUR USER

It seems what every player you are using is configured to scan your music folder and apply sorting and tags information and rearrange the files based on those tags.

I agree with logicearth. If you don't want to go about changing the settings (if you can!) in all your music programs just don't use "My Music" to archive your music. Use it as a temporary weight station only.

Create your own folder on your hard drive, name it anything but "My Music", and save all your stuff in that folder. The offending programs will not find and change anything unless you direct them to the new folder.

The my music folder sounds so typical. MS is such a dictator--a large part of the individualization I do on it is to stop it automatically doing things/making choices for me I don't want it to do!
Though maybe that is the players' deal and not MS.
What a waste of time to have a music folder and not be able to even use it.....
FYI, I did follow the Master's rec as well. Not sure if it would help or not since the occurrence was so random.

Whatever the case, thanks for the answers--i'm not a computer person!
