External Graphics Upgrade for Notebooks?

Has anyone here ever tried upgrading their laptop's integrated graphics with something like this using the express card slot? I remember reading something similar a while back that was very pricey, but this looks to be more affordable. Can this work with the laptop's monitor or is an external display needed? What is the latest progress at the lowest price regarding solutions like this?

I've only seen concept and potential products but haven't seen any released versions of this yet. Looks very promising though.
