msinfo32.exe system information incorrect info, how to edit it?

msinfo32

New member
Hi,

I am fairly new and in search of some help here on the forums. I have recently bought a computer from a friend (2nd hand). I ran msinfo32.exe in the run box and it shoot out the system information. On there I notice that the manufacture was incorrect and so it the model number. The desktop is a dell and the model is Inspiron 570 MT. I wanted to change it back to these vales but was unable to.

I tried using regedit searching under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\system\BIO S to change data under the name Base Board Manufacturer, system family, system Manufacture and system product name. I've successfully replaced it with the correct manufacture and product name but as I recheck msinfo32.exe it was still unchanged. I tried restarting it hoping that it would refresh the msinfo32.exe but all it did was restoring all the data that I edited.

Is there a way where I can change it back to the correct information?

Thanks,

msinfo30

Msinfo32 is queried by the OS from the hardware you cant change it from regedit. You might want to run an additional app (like everest) to see if you get consistent results.

If you do and they both are wrong maybe the guts of the computer have been changed and are different

I did some research on the internet and read some where that if CMOS and /or BIOS is reset everything is cleared out. I'm fairly new to all this and is want to know what would happen to my computer if I did reset both CMOS and BIOS.

I personally opened the case of the computer and checked each component verifying that everything is correct. I've installed everest but i was unable to locate the manufacture or model number on there.

Is there anyway for me to just change the Manufacturer and Model so that msinfo32.exe would read otherwise?

Thanks zigzag3143

System Manufacturer and Model in dxdiag

I recently built a new computer... When I type, "dxdiag" into Run, the System Manufacturer and System Model say "To be Filled by O.E.M.". Does anyone know how I can fill in these sections?

Please remove thread if this is a re-post. sorry

Have a look on your motherboard. You should find the actual board manufacturer/model number silk-screened on there somewhere. The lettering is usually white, and more often than not it is found near the memory slots, although its location can vary.

Thanksderekimo for the quick reply. I downloaded the program and change the info but when I ran dxdiag and msinfo it still says "To be Filled by O.E.M." Winbubble was only able to change the info on the system page under control panel. I want the change to be visible by msinfo and dxdiag, any idea?

I don't think so. But it might (or should) confirm what system information and dxdiag report.

YOU CANT. OEM=original equipment manufacturer.

You can clear the cmos and reset the bios but as soon as you boot your OS will query and get the same info.

What is the problem with what it is displaying? is it just annoying you, or is there something more you arent saying

I would be more concerned with XP and 1 gig memory

There is no guide. Every BIOS is different.
Changing it can be very very very disastrous.
Just leave it alone.

The reason why I want to edit it is because I bought a computer form a friend and the info is incorrect. It's still under warranty but when i took it in they said that they can't help me because of modification or something like that. They ran msinfo32 and dxdiag tell me that this is not the computer. I just need to edit it back so I can get back the warranty.

You are correct in what you say here. It is possible to change what it says on the rating page. However, both System Information and DxDiag both query the actual hardware and will report what they find.

I'm a bit curious as to why you want to change it.

One last stab at this. IF you change BIOS it is possible to make the computer unable to boot. Is it worth it to get the correct text displayed?
