Hibernate makes Windows think drive is dying

My 8-month-old Win 7 PC had been running without problems until I started using Sleep and Hibernate modes. After waking it from hibernate I started to get a regular Windows warning about a hard disk problem, ie “Windows detected a hard disk problem” etc. Did a backup of course and ran Check Disk which reported no problems on the Samsung HD502HJ 500GB drive.
Rebooted and stopped using sleep or hibernate, no problem. Went to hibernate and shortly after waking the problem returned. Rebooted and no problem has appeared.

It sounds very strange but can hibernating the PC make Windows think the HD is dying?
Any advice gratefully received.

If it were my computer, I would back up everything and take a real hard drive test.

Many thanks for the response. I did a backup when the problem first arose and I've just run a test using HD Tune as you suggested. The result looks good (I don't pretend to understand the fine detail) so I'm still puzzled as to what causes the Windows Disk Problem messages following hibernate. I've just run the PC for several hours without using sleep or hibernate and not one disk report popped up. After hibernating they appeared every few minutes. HD Tune report.....

That HD test is used when I do BSOD work, it is fairly accurate. Lets go with the assumption that there is a problem with hibernate

When it happens again, go to event viewer, and since there is not much to do there, view the events.

Find out what it reports about errors. Also do this
When it happes again, in an elevated cmd, use this
powercfg -lastwake

OK I'll try that tomorrow (Wednesday). I'm pretty sure it will do it if I hibernate the PC then wake it and do some clicking and clunking. At one point it seemed to do it each time I did Ctrl+Alt+S I know it looks significant but it doesn't actually seem to do anything.

Same thing happening today - if I don't use hibernate it's OK, but after hibernating I get the disk error report.

You have the advantage over me, you have access to the computer. From your posts this is what I have
Consistent report that the HD is bad
Clicking sound. Ticking or clicking is the traditional warning for bad HD.

Not being there, I lean toward a bad drive. I know that you took the HD test and all, but on one hand I have the HD test on the other I have the warnings and now the clicking. Seems like the HD malfunctions in some way after wake up.

Lets try this. It does not report on a bad HD, but it will tell if there is some OS corruption, maybe causing the bad warnings

OK will try that but I need to clarify that there have been NO clicking, ticking or any other unusual sounds from the HD. I guess I inadvertently confused things by saying that after the PC wakes I'd do some "clicking and clunking", by which I meant I'd click the mouse and clunk the keyboard. I chose the wrong terms. The only indication I've had that there's anything at all wrong has been the error reports. These now seem the appear every time (repeatedly) after hibernation but have not appeared even once if I have not used hibernate. I'll try the scan.

If it were my computer and it was running the way it is suppose to, except for hiberante, I just would not use that feature. If you do not agree, you can try a repair install

Back up your documents, first, there is always a chance that they may be lost.

I'll probably just avoid using hibernate and see how it goes. Thanks for your help - at least I've learned a few things along the way.

I am running windows 7 on Intel DG41RQ Mobo and Intel E5400 Processor with 2 GB Ram. Sometimes when I hibernate the system - re-starting the system again takes a very long time - that makes you think that something is wrong. Several times it has made me re-start the PC once again. I believe that like XP (when that was launched) it is difficult to come out of hibernation from Windows7. May be developers will notice this glitch and post a patch.

Mine wakes quickly from hibernation and the only problem I've noticed is the spurious hard drive warning I get every time. The reason I wanted to use hibernate (or sleep) rather than powering right down is that I have several users on the PC, and unless I log them all on straight away Windows creates temporary accounts for them when they try to log on. Hibernate avoids that problem but seems to have given me another one. Maybe MS will, in time, patch both problems.
