Help! One of my hard drives is ......

HI as i keep saying i am a total newbie and clueless as far as computer hardware is concerned.

COMPUTER SPECS:

HP PAVILLION ELITE M9255.UK
AMD PHENOM X4 9500 -QUAD CORE PROCESSOR ( 4GB RAM)
1TB MEMORY ( COMPRISED OF 2 500GB IDE HARD DRIVES)

after managing to install windows 7 ultimate 64bit
i was using my pc the other day when it shut down on me i tried restarting it but it wont boot . so i inserted the windows 7 dvd went into
command prompt > diskpart> list volume
and the list shows only one of my hard drives 500gb (465gb).
the original with a 30gb partition where the os was installed and the rest with my important files seems to have gone missing.

its listed in the system bios so i tried installing windows 7 on the other 500gb (465gb) showing on the list a few hours ago upon completion i then went into
start> disk management and it is listed there as disk 0 - type unknown - capacity 0mb status not initialized- device type IDE.

when i try to initialize the drive it pops up with a window saying incorrect function.
try to update driver it says:

WINDOWS DETERMINED THE DRIVER SOFTWARE FOR YOUR DEVICE IS UP TODATE.

so the question now is how to i recover my important files stored on it?
is there any way of making it function once again?
what is wrong with it as i fear it may have fried hence it shutting down the pc while in use if so why is it showing up in disk management, BIOS,etc?

please please please do help me as i been having a major struggle with this since the shut down and worst of all none of the information on it was backed up?
