Hi All, I've been struggling with this problem all night and after reading countless articles and trying dozens of fixes I figured I'd ask.

I installed a fresh machine today with Windows 7, and got everything to work minus my Samsung SH-S223C 22X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM. The drive works, as I used it to install Windows 7 in the first place.

It is detected by BIOS, as well as showing up in My Computer. The problem is, it won't read any disc (ive tried about 10) including the very same windows 7 install disc it previously installed from hours prior.

So far I've tried removing the upper/lowerfilters from the registry (they werent there in my case), update to the latest firmware, ran the driver detective driver scan and update, removed the drive from device manager and restarted, and run the microsoft utilities all to no avail. In fact, I've run these all several times now.

I'm absolutely at my wits end with this, and I can't even get support from Samsung as the product is a Canadian model and they seem to only support US models. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi bcred

Welcome to Seven Forums :)
Let's try the basics - recheck the connectors, power-cable to your drive.
Is the drive listed in explorer after boot?
If you have another DVD/CD-drive lying around, you could try swapping with the Samsung - we need to do this to try and isolate whether the actual hardware is faulty. Alternatively you could try swapping SATA connectors just in case the current one for your drive has gone south.

Keep us posted and regards

Edit

Re-read your post - disregard the q about the drive being shown in Explorer :o

Hi Lomai, thanks for replying. The drive is listed after boot, and I've tried multiple connectors on it now.

I've yet to find anything that fixes the problem. At first when I tried to access discs in the drive it gave me the error D:/ application not found. It's now changed to simply not thinking there's a disc in the drive and continually opening the drive prompting me to insert a disc (Ive tried all sorts, and tested the discs in another comp). Unfortunately I dont have an extra DVD drive to swap in to test

Maybe this way you can find out what's wrong. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel. In the search box (top right), type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. In the left pane, click View all, and then click Playing and Burning CDs, DVDs. Then follow the instructions.

Hi guys,, thanks for the suggestions. I've actually tried all of them (the firmware was SB03, now SB05), and the windows tool doesn't solve the problem, it just continually says to insert a working disc, which obviously will never happen and hits a dead end?

DO i have a faulty unit? I find this so strange as it worked fine for installing windows with until the operating system was installed

Hi

Thanks for your response.
Have you had a look at these threads?

Samsung SH-S223C 22X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM

SH-S223C Global distribution firmware SB03

I'm hoping that you do not a faulty unit (RMA or otherwise):(

Keep us posted
Regards

He is right on the forum page of the site above someone commented "There is a compatibility issue with this specific unit and win 7. Exchange it for a different model."

I was worried to read that as well. I did however see some retailers selling the drive as Microsoft Windows 7 certified, and aside from that one forum thread I don't see any other mention of a compatibility issue. The reviews for the drive on NCIX are exceptional, which Id think wouldn't be the case if it wasn't compatible with Windows 7

Hey, just wanted to give an update as I know it must be annoying for you guys when you help them with their problems and they don't share what resolved/didn't resolve it. I called up Samsung and they did say that this particular drive has Windows 7 compatibility issues (despite neither their website nor any online retailers saying this) so I've got an RMA as this was a cheap drive and not worth stressing over.

On a related note, can anyone recommend a good replacement from NCIX.com - Buy CD & DVD Drives In Canada. or any of the Blu-Ray drives. I really never thought dvd drives would have compatibility issues, but now that it's happened... I really don't want to go 0 for 2 with them.

Thanks!
