Following the advice in How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word 2010, Word 2007, Word 2003, or Word 2002 I found that the Normal.dot file must have been corrupted and Word 2003 was very slow to start or exit, and files ver slow to load and save. After renaming and replacing Normal.dot the normal Winword.exe worked fine without the /safe or /a mode. Of course, I tried every other method known to man to no avail before the above method.
