Increasing monitor refresh rate.

So I was thinking about increasing my monitor's refresh rate.

What's the danger behind it?

I have a SAMSUNG P2070.

Increasing refresh for CRTs above recommended can cause damage to the monitor. I do not believe the same is true for LCDs. I don't think any image would be displayed, though - being out of range.

So It would be safe to increase it to.... I don't know.... ~70ish?

You could give it a try, but if it's out of range of the monitor, it might not display at all, and then you might be buggered.

I believe the refresh rate is native like resolutions are. You can check to see what your monitor will accept and/or handle. In my case I have two monitors an HP and a Gateway, running a ATI HD 4770 connected by DVI. The HP monitor will only show 60 hertz, with tick in box for hide the rest, unticked says the same. The gateway has two settings 60/75 hertz. Running this set up under vista I had to change refresh rate of gateway monitor to 75 while HP monitor was set to 60 in order for the monitor to work correctly. Then upgraded to 7 and both are running at 60 hertz and since upgrade gpu to a 4870. Both are at 60 and switching gateway to 75 did absolutely nothing for me. Play around with it and see what you can find out.

let me back up here, while running vista and dual monitors, at first it was off mobo and then gpu, but monitor one was connected DVI and one was connected VGA, even with the 4770. It was this set up I was running 60 hertz and 75 hertz and same under windows 7. I just recently got a second DVI cable for second monitor. That's when I noticed both were at 60 hertz...I'm wondering if cabling might have something to do with it also.

it is stated quite clearly on the specs page for your monitor that the maximum refresh rate is 60. Why do you want to increase the refresh rate?

Nahh, I know about Vertical Sync mate .

The thing is, I'm curious to know whether forcing a higher refresh rate on my monitor would help decrease the screen tearing I get when running Battlefield: Bad Company 2. There's seriously something wrong with that game's VSync setting.

Performance REALLY takes a hit with it enabled (1600 x 900, AA @ 2x, AF @ 16x, Everything on HIGH, HBAO ON). It usually goes as low as ~40 FPS, but it actually feels like ~20, especially when looking directly at large open environment (I've tried enabling triple buffering as well, it doesn't help =/).

Now, with VSync disabled, same settings as before but with AA @ 16x CSAA Q (yup, 16x lol), it plays MUCH MUCH smoother, but there's massive screen tearing to go along with it.

If my monitor doesn't support a higher refresh rate then I guess I'm screwed lol.

EDIT: If you guys know of any tips that would help me reduce screen tearing in games, please let me know.

yeah, forcing a higher refresh rate will cause your screen to be blank with the words "out of range." You will then not be able to do anything, hence being buggered.
