In services, how do you know whether you or your system needs that service or not? One needs to be careful about messing with services.

Carl is absolutely right. Besides if you think you need to disable any services I recommend to rather go through the services.msc servlet instead of msconfig and set the services in question to manual instead of disabled. That way Windows can still pull them up if some application relies on them.

Basically yes. a few services do need to run automatically, but at least if it is set to manual it will usually run when needed.

Yes, that is correct. Services are a bit different than they were in XP. Even on automatic, Win 7 is very good about starting services when needed and stopping them when no longer needed. You will notice that there is an option for "Delayed start". Win 7 uses this for services that are needed; but necessarily needed at startup.

There is very little reason to change service in Win 7 unless it is a service you know you are not going to use. For example, I have no Bluetooth devices. I set all related services to manual and they are not loaded. A few services like remote registry, I disabled for security reasons. All in all, I think I disabled eight services. And I did set some from automatic to manual. But even doing this, be careful. Make sure you do not need a service before you change it from automatic to manual.

Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > services. Click on a service and what it does will be detailed on the left. The only services I change the settings on remote registry (disabled for security reasons) and the two Home Group services (set to manual since I don't use Home Group anyways).

Edited to add: Orlando is OK for a big metro area. I grew up in the country on the outskirts of Orlando. I liked it then. I moved away in 1964 and returned 2.5 years ago. I do not like urban/suburban life. :) Fortunately I can escape to the country in about an hour.

To be honest Selective Startup is not a fix is a troubleshooting step to find out if an Startup item is causing the System to give errors or Performance issues. It's NOT recommend to put the System in Selective Startup always because if something messes up it can stop the System from booting so be really careful before you do such a step.

Microsoft says its as "System Configuration is intended to find and isolate problems, but it is not meant as a startup management program. To permanently remove or turn off programs or services that run at startup, see Uninstall or change a program."

There is small Tool that can help you Tweak the startup created out of Vipers guide which Carl posted Tweak Windows Services with SMART Utility : HomePage | The Windows Club

In short be careful when you play with it. Create a Restore point.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Orlando is great for a large metro area, much nicer than most. And for a younger person, there is plenty to do. I am basically a country boy at heart. Welcome to Central Florida! I'm glad you like it. There certainly are worse places to be. :D

Yes the Black Viper Web Site is the definitive source of information on Windows 7 services. It took me 3 straight hours of study to familiarize myself with all of the interdependencies of the various services the first time I visited the site. Many people claim their is no use in disabling unneeded services in Win 7, but I caught at least a dozen of those system resource sucking Services which I have absolutely no need for running and I just can't understand how that can not be considered an improvement.

The answer to that is because Win 7 manages memory and resources differently and much more efficiently than did its predecessors. Unless something is wrong, Win 7 is not going to bog down. Removing a handful of services will not make any difference in speed or efficiency. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Win 7 is not going fill up RAM and bog down unless something is not working properly. Stopping some services may speed up boot time a little; but it does not change the operating speed. If Windows does not need a service, it will stop the service.

From the Windows Club Website about the SMART (Service Management And RealEasy Tweaking) Utility

"You can always tweak your services manually individually, but what this utility does is automate the entire process to give you the desired settings. Based on the recommendations of the BlackVipers Service Configuration Guide, the utility offers 3 sets of pre- configured tweaks :

1. Safe
2. Tweaked
3. Advanced or BareBones

The utility has set the Presets to check for Service before applying Tweak. There is also a button to re-set services to Windows Default Settings."

Thanks for the link Carl and excellent advice indeed Captain.
