Not enough space are you serious??

Hi Guys.

Got new HDD 1.5TB which I split into 2 roughly 686GB each and windows installer tells me not enough space to install.

Even thought I was clever by trying to add the 100mb system partition and naming it system and it still didn't work.

Am I missing something obvious?

It sounds like it may be trying to install to the space you created for the "System Reserved" partition.


Are you selecting the correct partition at this dialog box?

I tried just the 686 partition and with the 100Mb partition in front of it same issue both times.

Even if i put the drive back into one partition it says the same thing.

Maybe you should start again, I would suggest a secure erase of whole drive.
When trying OS install just let the install do what it wants, choose nothing, the install disk will create the system reserve again, but it should not try and install whole OS there.??????.
If you do get a clean install, you can shrink the OS partition after the fact, and add the other partitions you want.
You do not really want a 600+GB, OS partition do you?

I know this I've tried everything. Could it be because it's not a C pathname on the drive?

But will give it a go 2moz and post back my findings.

Very good points.

Do the wipe "secure erase" you can use the Windows installer to create the SysResv partition while you are creating the other partitions, just create the SysResv partition first and mark it "Active" while creating it so the boot files will be created there.

Then create the second partition to install Windows to, 600 is way too big, we're seeing real issues with people trying to install to too large a space, I wouldn't create a space to install to larger than 200GB, that is plenty large.

Just create those 2 partitions for the install then create the others after it's finished.

One thing more DO NOT: mark any other partition as "Active" for the install, it will cause serious issues.

I have figured it out!

Probably should of mentioned my other HDD had xp 64 and win7 32bit on it, so that disk had a system partition which win7 32 was using.
So when I've tried to install win764bit on the 2nd HDD it threw a wobbler because it couldn't have the C path as a system partition because it was already present on another drive.

Only realised this when I removed the 1st drive on the off chanve this was the case and the install was now finally started.

Yes, that's why I posted that last link; the other Hard Disk Drive (HDD) was "System, Active" and that was causing the issues, the SysResv couldn't also be the "System" partition.

YES, YES YES,
If the system reserve partition is being seen as the C:, W7 will try to install there. Thats what Barefoot was getting at. The system reserved suppose to not impede this but because you tried to name things???????????? maybe. With my install all I did was allocate 80GB of the 90GB available. No format, and let it go.

I recently used my W7 disk to align a SSD for an XP install. The W7 disk created the system reserve partition here as well. The XP install disk listed the reserve partition as C:, OS would not install. So, I just deleted the reserve partition with the XP disk. Reboot and the larger partition I had created became the C:. Boom OS install complete.
Now W7 needs the reserve partition so you cannot just delete it for a W7 install.

So secure erase the disk, with W7 disk, start process. When the partition part comes up select new, create a 60GB partition, thats it no format see if install occurs.

Don't get me wrong I understand all that. I just wanted to play it safe. By turning off the other HDD to let the install go ahead on the new, which would then be marked active automatically was the safest option.
Now going to transfer data from old HDD to new then reformat and use as back up.

I love figuring things out as much as you guys and value all of your input.

It is more satisfying to work things out yourself eh.
