Hi,

yesterday i noticed that when i press 4 once in keypad =4 appears and if i 4 stayed pressed then 4 appears normally. In addition when i presss / from keypad it place / on the left and not on the right as it supposed to do. All the other buttons on my keyboard work normally. Right now, i noticed that if i press 8 from keypad the cursor goes up, but this only happens in the forum while trying to write the post. I tried in notepad and 8 appears normally.

I have an HP 8730w with Windows 7 (x64) installed.

Please advice.

Could be bad a driver. Could be a bad keyboard.

Is this a new laptop? Did it come with W7 installed? Or did you install W7?

Did you install the Chipset and Touchpad drivers from HP for your laptop, or are you using the Microsoft drivers automatically installed with W7?

This is not a new laptop. It is 2 years old. It came with Windows XP Professional installed. I installed Windows 7.

After this problem i format the laptop and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 and disable all the updates from Microsoft. I installed all the drivers from HP website except the graphics card driver where new drivers were found in Ndivia web page. The problem still exists.

What is the best to do? Install drivers from Microsoft or from Hp?

What i can do now?

P.S I also noticed that two base devices are not recongized.

The way you reinstalled was a great idea. Now you know exactly what was and what was not done.

If HP has W7 drivers for your laptop then you want to install those as first priority.
If HP does not have a W7 driver, then you can try the Windows Update ones.
If there is no W7 driver from either, then go back to HP and install an XP or Vista driver in "Compatibility Mode".

Those "Base System Devices" are components of the laptop that are not identified by W7 that have no drivers and are non functional. You need to find out what they are and find and install the W7 drivers for them.

The easiest way to do this is to open Device Manager > Expand (left arrow) on the unknown device to see any sub-devices > right click on the device > choose: properties > go to the Details Tab > in the Properties drop down box choose "Hardware IDs"

You will see a list of alpha-numeric names. The first one will be something like this: PCI\VEN_xxx&DEV_xxx .....

Take the PCI\VENxxx number and google it. This will give you a manufacturer. That may be all you need to figure out what the device is. If you google the DEVxxx number you might even get the device name.

Even better go here: www.pcidatabase.com

Hope that helps

What about the numeric keypad problem?
I never experience such a problem since 4-5 days ago.
Any suggestions?

Can you help finding the missing drivers?

Vendor 1180 is RICOH.
Device 0592 is a MEMORY STICK CONTROLLER
Device 0843 is a SD/MMC HOST CONTROLLER

Both of these devices are actually your "5 in 1 card reader driver", or similar, and the drivers for these 2 devices is included in that package you should find on the HP website (don't ask me how I know this:o).

Unfortunately, I don't think this addresses the keyboard issue, but check it anyway.
Again, check to see if there is a driver for your laptop from HP that is listed as a "hotkey" driver or similar. This is a driver that allows special keys to be recognized for unique functions of the laptop. Do a restore point before installing this. It may solve the issue, or it may cause it.

I already installed the ricoh media card driver but it seems for somehow that is not. I don't know what else to do since i disable and enable the device from device manager and Microsoft cannot find any driver.

About the numeric keypad
How can i check if it is a software or hardware problem? What else can i do for this problem?

This really sounds like a driver issue, because in the code for the driver is likely something like xxxxxxx==4, and if the end of it was misinterpreted from an older driver code it could see it as "=4". It might be a hardware issue, but it would be incorporated as part of your motherboard on an HP. Does this happen if you use an external keyboard?

You now have 2 issues: 1- need a driver for the Media Reader, 2- keyboard.

For #1: from the evidence you have given us those unknown devices are definitely the Media Card Reader and the problem is the driver is not installing correctly.

On the HP website, what version of Windows does it say the driver is compatible with?

When you install the driver package, are you executing the exe in Compatibility Mode?
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html

For #2: your numeric keypad problem could be similar or related = you need to install the keyboard or touchpad driver in compatibility mode. You may need to run ALL of the laptop's driver installations in Compatibility Mode.
Or you need to install or uninstall the "Hotkey" program/driver if there is one.

If the keyboard works fine in XP Pro but not in W7 that would further indicate a driver compatibility issue.

If you do due diligence and check all of this carefully and still have a problem then that can only lead to one last possibility: defective keyboard and/or laptop.

There isn't any driver for the keyboard, only the touchpad has a driver to install (already done).I didn't try an external keyboard since i don't have any usb keyboard.

1) The HP website does not say something about compatibility mode but if i go to the properties of the driver with right click then i can see that it is compatible with Windows XP SP2 as it can be seen from the below attachment.
HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation -  Ricoh Media Card Reader Driver - HP Business Support Center

2) The touchpad driver installed with Windows XP SP3 compatibility since this is the default settings as it can be seen from the attachment. All the drivers were installed in their default settings.
I didn't found any hotkey in HP website.

HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation -  Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

The keyboard was working fine in Windows XP SP3 and also as i remember it was working fine in Windows 7 too until few days ago.

Can i do something else or should i take the laptop to HP service?

OK. Good information.

The Ricoh Card Reader Driver is compatible with all versions of Windows 7. You would not need to install this driver package in any compatibility mode. Just run the exe as is.

Regarding compatibility mode, in the window you show in your screenshot, that does not mean that the driver is already in XP mode. The default option is always XP mode. You manually choose your preferred OS mode to run a program in from the drop down box.

But that does not apply in your case. Your drivers from HP are good for W7. So forget compatibility mode for now.

On the second HP link you posted, go there and scroll down to the section for "Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices". In that section there is a "HP Quicklaunch Buttons" driver. That is the equivalent to a "Hotkey" driver.
Have you installed that yet?

You also want to be running the most current version of the touchpad driver (actually, all the drivers). The one at the top: version 15.0.24.

It is best practice to uninstall any previous driver before installing a newer one. Do not rely on the driver package to overwrite the old one if you want to avoid any strange problems.

If the keyboard was working fine until recently then you want to look for any software changes since the behavior started, particularly any Windows Updates.

If you can't get the issue resolved through these procedures then yes, you probably need someone who can physically look at your system to help.

Hi,

HP Quicklaunch Buttons already installed as the touchpad latest version. All drivers were installed after a clean installation of Windows 7.
I just installed the Essential system updates but unfortunately no change has been noticed. The problems are still here.

I should clarify. Yes, there is not a "driver" for the keyboard, but there is a program that makes it run, which is what I suspect is creating these problems, unless it is indeed hardware. Let me spend a few hours doing google-fu on this issue.

1)After installing the Essential System Updates from Hp the Ricoh media card reader problem solved since windows recognized the drivers.

2)I uninstalled the previous drivers for the graphic card and for the quick launch buttons. Restart and then install the recommended drivers by LiquidSnak.

Unfortunately, no change has been noticed. The problem with the keyboard is still here.
