Microsoft Extends Windows XP until the end of May 2009

I'm not a betting man, but if Vista is as much on the nose as people say and Windows 7 is the real successor to XP as people say, is there some significance in the date here?

"The software giant Microsoft announced over the weekend that it would allow computer manufacturers to receive copies of the old operating system Windows XP until the end of May 2009, which is shortly before the successor to Vista, Windows 7, is expected to hit the market. While the economy may be struggling, the oft-criticized operating system has been a deterrent for people in the market for a new PC, preferring instead the previous operating system, Windows XP.
vista_qa_header.jpg
Windows Vista can be characterized as nothing short of a failure, earning the ire of PC fans, as they struggle to use, understand, and even run Windows Vista on both older and newer PCs. The operating system is widely criticized for its tendency to hog system resources and it has been uncharacteristically slow to be adopted by businesses compared to other Windows versions. On the other hand, Windows XP is considered reliable and easier to use.
Microsoft originally planned to retire Windows XP in January 2008, but decided to extend the life of the operating system in response to criticisms and the demand from consumers and manufactures alike, who wished to run the older XP system on newly produced computers.
This is great news for gamers as well. The massive amount of system resources that Vista consumes has created a problem for gamers, creating lag and forcing users to run games on lower graphic settings. The news will give gamers who are looking to upgrade to a new computer more options in what they choose, easily bypassing Vista until the new operating system is available. Now that Microsoft has seemingly thrown in the towel on Vista, hopefully they put their resources towards an operating system free of the mistakes that plagued Vista."

Microsoft Extends the Life of Windows XP

If Microsoft dont do that then they would loose a lot of money, as we all know Vista is a huge failure and all Microsoft customers prefer XP.

I do hope there is a significance in that date, the sooner the better!

All we can do is hope and prey they dont pull a Vista with the launch date!

Whoa? That is quite the statement. Vista was a failure financially only. And not *all* Microsoft customers prefer XP. I can't stand XP so much I already won't work on people's XP machines anymore. You should not blanket statement all of us.

OK, I was wrong to say all Microsoft customers, but in my own opinion Vista was a failure.

If you like it then fine, a person's operating system choice is down to their opinions, that's why the Mac vs. PC argument will never end, because it's based on opinions and no one is changing theirs.

Although, if you look at my specs, you will see I have Vista Basic installed regardless of my opinion :D

I don't consider Vista a failure or prefer XP.

Agreed. If the beta is 'feature complete', then there shouldn't be any reason to delay the release. Sure hope not.

I have a sneaking suspicion it is *not* feature complete, hence the move to a public Beta. As more and more users try it and *like* it they'll get a better feel for what other features need to be included - such as multi-monitor taskbars, Ease of communication and file transfer between OSs, a new File system, etc.

I agree, Vista is far superior to XP, In my post you will note I said " if Vista is as much on the nose as people say and Windows 7 is the real successor to XP as people say" This isn't an agreement of these points of view, but paraphrasing what the article said.

It is possible that you don't like Vista because you are using the "basic" version that lacks many of the "goodies" that enhance the Vista experience

Not really, I don't like it because in my opinion it's bloated, counter intuitive, it dosent work with my printer, and it's very buggy.

My latest problem is that it wouldn't let me print a simple Word 2007 document.

That's why I'm interested in Seven, because apparently it's fixed up a lot under the hood and the UI has small improvements here and there to make things better.

well you have to ask yourself

is your printer supported by vista???

this is not vista's problem its the hardware manufacturer's problem if its not supported....

i hate how people put the whole blame on Microsoft only to be also faulty drivers made by lazy programmers not following the standards.....

i mean MS has some blame in this but not as much as most people give credit to....

sorry to be rude but i vista isnt all that bad either...

as i say again sorry to be rude to you.....

It should be, a new OS should be able to let me print things without me buying a whole bunch of new hardware, and I think this sort of stuff - the notorious driver problems - is a large part of why many regard Vista as a failure.

There are more things, too, the problem I had before that is that the Windows Update app crashed every time I tried to use it, and that little update icon disappears whenever I click it without anything opening.

Anyway, like I said earlier, a person's choice of OS is down to opinions so lets not argue :)

@Se7en kbs; see what I meant....;)

It could be that you've hacked your Vista up, as I see what you've done with the WEI in Vista, you can't expect 'things' to operate correctly when changed internally.

As I tried to tell you earlier; the majority of the people that frequent these forums like Vista and don't appreciate Vista bashers. Also as I said earlier, you're entitled to your opinion, just please limit it's display at these forums to quell any "discussion" along those lines.

Thank you!

Later ;) Ted
