The power supply is the problem. Only 255W in the desk top version. The GTS450 needs one 6 pin power cable and it is very unlikely your PSU has one.

A few questions for you before we can do that,

1. What size is the case? If it is anything other than the first one as shown in the link Hopalong posted, then you are looking at low profile cards only. The 450 you were asking about is available in low profile,

Newegg.com - Palit NE5S4500F0601 GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

but you would still need a new power supply.

2. What is the primary use of the card going to be? Gaming, office use, HTPC, etc?

3. Nvidia only or is a card from AMD OK?

Yours look like this on the inside,

780inside.PNG

If so you may run into a problem with most of the new(er) cards as they are pretty much all dual slot cards (second slot covered but not used, by the heatsink and fan on the card), and from looking at that picture there is a good possibility that the card and/or the heatsink on it will be bumping into the fan shroud on the CPU; if that shroud isn't outright in the way. Also there is one other small problem with that case, you can't put a dual slot card in it as there is only one slot/bracket in the back panel for a card, which means single slot cards only.

Also as mentioned previously you will need a new power supply for any cards made today that require an extra power connection from the PSU. here are the full specs for the PSU's that come with the 780,

780PSU.PNG

and based on the specs of them I'm not sure I would even try running a card that doesn't require the extra connection.

Also what games are you looking to play?

That's probably the smallest dedicated video card I've seen.

Sad thing is even if he had the power supply to run that card, he couldn't install it in the case due to the PCI-E slot location and lack of mounting slots in the back panel.

Dell has a list of recommended graphics cards for an Optiplex 780 Mini Tower:

Graphics Cards : Parts & Upgrades | Dell

They're pretty much low-end cards. At a guess, the ATI Radeon 4670 may be the most powerful card listed. It seems like it would want a larger power supply than on the 780, but Dell lists it as compatible. (Seems like it should work. The max power for a card without auxiliary power connectors is 75W.)

I purchased and shipped a GT220 to member no longer on here and he seems to like how it preformed. So If your stuck on Nvidia I would recommend it based on his reviews on using it for not only gaming (mostly GTAIV) but photoshop and other GFX applications. It can be found on the Dell link.

But then XFX makes a single slot 5550 card but still requires a minimum 400w psu and no 6pin connector required it's pretty compact yet the shroud could still be a problem. Newegg.com - XFX HD-555X-ZNF2 Radeon HD 5550 1GB 128-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

You can also buy low profile bracket combos but after doing some searching I couldn't find a bracket combo that would work on any of the cards.

Newegg also offers a 5450 low profile card without a fan so it would fit but It didn't list the minimum power supply which I would presume to be 400w also Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100292L Radeon HD 5450 (Cedar) 1GB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Low Profile Ready Video Card

Unfortunately these are the problems commonly found when trying to upgrade an OEM system. Most make it so your stuck going back to them to get any kind of upgrade.

are we talking about gt 240 ??

according here : http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex-780-tech-guide.pdf

Minitower supports full height card..

and here : Graphics Cards : Parts & Upgrades | Dell

it shows the compatible nvidia graphic cards..and GT 220 is listed here..

GeForce GT 220

Standard Graphics Card Dimensions:
Height 4.376 inches
Length 6.6 inches
Width Single-slot

GeForce GT 240

Standard Graphics Card Dimensions:
Height 4.376 inches (111 mm)

they have the same dimensions....

Yes same dimensions .. but that does not say how thick the GPU heatsink & fan are.

Here are two GT 240s, one is a proper single slot, and there other is not.

You cannot use the:
Newegg.com - Palit NE5S4500F0601 GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

In the 780 you don't have the empty case slot next to the PCIe slot for the Video Card.

I put this card (link below) in a Dell 780 and it works perfectly. You will have to replace the power supply. Note: you will need to modify your case for the non-OEM power supply, so you need to be aware of that before you start.

This is exactly what I was referring to about OEM systems and how they make it hard to upgrade their systems without buying from them. Things like boards made just for them to case configurations and even non standardized power supplies. Severely limit your choices.

Which by the time your ready for a new system you should get comfortable enough with the internal workings to build your own.
Hopefully though this time you'll find a suitable suggestion from all the posts above.
